When it comes to reviving familiar characteristics, there are a number of approaches that can be taken, all forced to find a balance between honoring the source material and injecting the concept with unexpected elements. For Kathleen Robertson, she participated in the 1994 film swimming with sharks It brought with it a number of new perspectives, not only with the setting and its characters, but also with the medium in which the story was presented. Sure, the staples of Hollywood’s darkest staples stay intact, but Robertson brings plenty of freshness with them. All six episodes of swimming with sharks Premieres on Roku Channel on April 15th.
“I saw the movie when it first came out, which was amazing – I can’t believe I just realized it was premiered 18 years ago at TIFF. And I think it was definitely a movie for everyone in the movie industry that, when it came out, was like ‘Holy sh -t” It was really shocking. Everyone knew it was based on real life experiences the writer had with his superiors, and so I think the movie has always stuck in the brain like… It’s definitely like a cult classic. It has, like, an element Iconic in it,” Robertson shared with ComicBook.com when discussing her links to the source material. “I was working with Lionsgate on another project and they brought it up, they basically brought it to me and said, ‘Is this something you might be interested in exploring or adapting? ‘ And I thought, ‘I don’t really know if I really have anything to say in this space, especially since it’s a story about these two men. I’ve been in this industry since I was 10.”
She continued, “I’ve had a lot of experiences along the way that have really shaped me, changed me, shaped me. And so I thought, ‘Oh, maybe there’s something interesting here.” Maybe there is a way to take the space and the world, but tell him who these two women are. One of them just started working. Others grew up in this field. So this was the entrance.”
The new series revolves around the dark side of the Hollywood studio system and an assistant turns the tables on an abusive boss. We’re all in the industry, and this whole series is an intense but intriguing case you just can’t get away from. Filled with psychological twists and turns, the series’ compelling stories paired with powerful performances will have audiences on the edge of their seat.
By the time the original film came out, the thriller was praised by audiences and critics alike, but the genre ended by the end of the decade. While the source material may not explore these themes, Robertson found a way to inject these elements into her reimagining of the project.
Robertson explained, “I feel exactly what I want to watch now. I am so excited when I find something that feels like it drops me into a world I probably don’t know much about.” of her approach. “Or I get a little immersed in a space that feels alien to me. So I guess that’s why [erotic thrillers are] Back seems very straightforward to me. I mean, I think we’re all exhausted. I think we are all exhausted. I think we’re all tired of spoon-feeding kale salad with our side order of sauce. I was just like, ‘F-ck. I want to write something crazy and go out there and be fun, exciting, and weird. ”
She added, “I definitely don’t want to tell people how they feel or be a message or heavy. So that was my intention with it, and that’s what I think we managed to do. In terms of why the movies went too far, I don’t know. I mean, I actually I don’t know. I’m sure people got tired of it and now people seem to be ready for it again a little bit.”
As much as whether these first episodes were a complete journey or whether it was just the beginning of something bigger, Robertson already has a few ideas in mind.
“It was always something that, when I wrote this, when I initially designed it, it was always a running streak for me,” Robertson emphasized. “So the hope is yes, people are in it, people are watching it, and we have to keep going and do it. I have ideas for what I want season two to be, and season three and four, which is definitely early stages, but wood ways, we’ll be able to keep going.”
As far as future seasons can explore, though, in terms of continuing these characters’ journey, Robertson has played things up a bit.
“Well, I’m hesitant to talk about it just because if I were just deciding what it is, yeah, I know exactly what I want it to be,” said the director sarcastically. “But we haven’t had those creative conversations yet with the studio and the network. So I think it’s definitely a world, although I think, again, the idea of those unconventional relationships and there’s like a shift in power. That’s an area and a world, to me… for as long as I said the least interesting thing about this is the Hollywood component. That’s just me. I feel like a show could and will happen anywhere – the gist of what’s really interesting is I think people tend to be fascinated by the entertainment industry. It’s literally, like, If you’re on a plane and you ask someone, “What do you do for a living?” ‘ And they’re like, ‘I work in finance.’ She’s like, “Oh, well,” and if she’s like, “What are you doing?” “I’m in the entertainment industry,” everyone is like, “Oh, my God.” So I think it’s a great place to focus on a series just because people are fascinated by it. Everyone wants to taste it.”
