Isamu Noguchi Sculptures Star in a Short Film Directed by FKA Twigs – ARTnews.com

Dancers swing and swing around the curvy sculptures of Isamu Noguchi in a new film directed by FKA Twigs. The music video is titled playscapeTo celebrate the announcement of the seven finalists Walmark 2022 International Prize, which honors rising fashion talents from around the world. This year’s edition is “inspired by Noguchi’s pioneering interdisciplinary work and the importance of play in creativity,” according to the site.

FKA Twigs, the avant-garde British pop artist, has partnered with the Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum to assemble staff inspired by the sculptor’s visions of “extreme” pitches. One of the most popular designs of the 20’sy Century, Noguchi has continually pushed forward notions of an object’s functionality, whether it be an industrial tool, a piece of furniture, or a work of art. In the 1930s, he began designing a series of public gardens that served as “playable” art – sculptures that existed to be worked on.

“I think of stadiums as an introductory basis for forms and functions; simple, mysterious and evocative,” Noguchi said in 1975.

He completed only one such stadium in the United States before his death in New York in 1988. In 1973 he was commissioned by the National Endowment for the Arts to build several structures in Piedmont Park near the Atlanta High Museum. His abstract creations included a massive stone slide, a low pile, spider swings, and blue and green climbing blocks.

playscape The scene begins with a shot of the play’s sculptures in an empty gallery, but is soon joined by dancers whose dances – courtesy of famous dancer Giuliano Nunes – mirror their curvy form. A bright red piece resembling an undulating wave or an infinity sign is paired with a dancer in a loose red robe. Twigs, who is herself a seasoned modern dancer, is also shown locking and releasing her limbs in angular motions that match the rigorous geometry of Noguchi’s massive, stacked cubes.

“It is a great honor to be chosen for the Woolmark Award to work with such talented designers and to create my first work with Juliana Nunes, choreographer for Avant Garden Group,” Twigs said in a statement.
