Time doesn’t stop for any man, which can be a bit of a challenge when it comes to making movies, especially when it comes to the aging process. Stories sometimes require smaller versions of the characters, but not so much that paraphrasing is required. This is where de-aging technology comes in, but while it may seem like some filters have only been used for shaving for a few years, the visual effects involved turn out to be a little more complicated than that. According to digital field supervisor VFX Kelly Port, there are actually a lot of different processes involved in removing digital aging — and any number of them can be used, depending on the needs of the project or scene.
“It’s a bunch of different technologies,” Port said while doing it. “Some studios have some kind of deep fake tech. There’s a lot of special face tracking that goes into it, and then they basically track that and have to turn it back on.” appearance on Corridor crew. “It’s also kind of pushing, flexing, and pulling.”
