Marvel Studios sequel from Motorcycle rental Director Taika Waititi is an ’80s throwback, complete with a retro rad outfit for Raviger Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Korg (Waititi), but the trailer throws it back even further—to the ’60s, when writers Stan Lee and Larry Lieber and artist Jack Kirby took a swing of the Norse gods in Journey into the mystery No. 83.
The trailer begins with a younger Asgardian god of Thunder running through the ages and a quick costume change. With a winged helmet, red cape, chest epaulettes, blue-black color scheme, and matching yellow belt and laced boots, it’s a classic Kirby look.
It’s not the only meticulously comical look Thor wears love and thunder: In the current Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Asgardian Avenger gets an armored look that resembles the magical battle armor he wore for a spell in the comics by Walter Simonson and Sal Buscema. In this race, Hela curses Thunder with brittle bones and must wear blue-yellow armor forged from Asgardian steel and be charmed by Odin’s sacred runes.
Thor: Love and Thunder He finds Thor on a journey unlike anything he has ever encountered – in search of inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic assassin known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – uses his magic hammer, Mjolnir, inexplicably, like Mighty Thor. Together, they embark on a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the secret of the butcher god’s vengeance and stop it before it’s too late.
