Memes are like inside jokes – hearing oneself can reveal a lot about a situation that you know very little about.
In a similar way, memes about the world of art and the art industry can be a fun way to better understand the complexes and issues that people deeply rooted in art occupy in their minds, while showcasing the different ways in which people experience the multifaceted phenomena we call “the art world.”
For example, freeze_magazine, which is run by an immigrant who studied organizing at a prestigious school in London, makes laxative and/or hopeless memes about the dangers of entering the art world without family money. Meanwhile, Jerrygogosian, a blonde former curator, composes the tortured social dances and deceptions that go into buying and selling artwork.
And of course, the popular meme page is not just a medium in itself. Since starting their page, @freeze_magazine has had an exhibition of his memes at the Weserhalle Gallery in Berlin, while @jerrygogosian has started a newsletter and is currently funding her trip to the Venice Biennale.
