Tony Khan’s Big Dynamite announcement update for AEW for this week

AEW President Tony Khan has made another important announcement for this week AEW Dynamite. The big speculation this time around is that he will announce a super show between AEW and New Japan (something fans have been wanting to see for years) this June in Chicago. Khan has not commented on that speculation, but Dave Meltzer pointed out this week Sunday Night Main Event AEW officials did not deny the rumor when he asked about it.

“Yes, I heard rumors of a new show between Japan and AEW and the only thing I can say is that I asked and it wasn’t turned down,” Meltzer said. “It hasn’t been confirmed and they won’t confirm the surprise to me, so for me that’s leaving that person on the table as a potential surprise because if they didn’t make that offer, I think I would have been told ‘we’re not doing this offer’ so I guess there’s smoke for that fire.”

He also suggested that the announcement might be AEW’s pairing with the streaming service, noting that Tony Khan was actively working on it after purchasing Ring of Honor and its tape library. Meltzer said the announcement could also be a distribution deal for ROH given the TV promotion’s deal with Sinclair Broadcasting officially expires this week. Khan was unable to provide an update on future ROH events, pay-per-view or TV deal after the Supercard of Honor.

For New Japan, AEW has strengthened its working relationship with the Japanese promotion over the past few years with talent transitioning to both promotions. The upcoming new Japan event in the US, Capitol Collision, will feature AEW stars such as Jon Moxley, Eddie Kingston and Brody King. Khan spoke about the relationship with the new Japan during a conference call in November.

“It’s a great relationship, I’m really enjoying working with the new Japan. It’s changed a lot, because when AEW first started, I think they were really upset with me. With the wrestling going on, I think they saw that I wasn’t really trying to stop them from doing anything and I did. Actually a lot of friendly gestures along the way,” Khan said.

“I think they saw this as a good relationship and I have a good reputation for being an honest person,” he continued. “So even though I came off the left field and was a new player in the game, I think I raised their antennas early on and made them really nervous. And then (as) I gained a bigger reputation in the sport. I think they want to work with me. And so I talk to them. Now on a regular basis and I put matches together.”
