The upcoming Disney/Pixar movie Lightyear tells the true story of the Space Ranger (voiced by Chris Evans) that inspired the Buzz Lightyear character we all know and love from the Toy Story series. We’ve already seen LEGO sets based on the movie, and Funko recently hooked up with a bunch of Lightyear Pop characters.

Lightyear Funko Pops were already pre-ordered over the weekend, but, as is sometimes the case with Funko Pop releases, they got a low-key launch ahead of the official reveal. Popular figures in the lineup include Buzz Lightyear (XL-15 suit) with Sox and Buzz Lightyear (XL-01 suit, Sox and Izzy Hawthorne, all available to pre-order here on amazon And Here at Entertainment Earth (Free US shipping on orders $39 + using SPRINGFREE22 at checkout). As far as exclusives to the Lightyear Funko Pop wave are concerned, you can find Buzz’s glow-in-the-dark (XL-01 suit) here on amazon.

This new movie has been described as “The Origin of Buzz Lightyear” and is intended to be a source material in the universe for the Buzz Lightyear game from Toy Story franchise based. Director Angus MacLean explained how the new film fits in with Toy Story Universe in a recent interview with Fandango.

“There’s a basic idea about Buzz that we noticed when we really looked at both Toy Story Movies: That Buzz has a disagreement about the nature of reality, “MacLane began.” at first Toy StoryHe thinks he’s a space ranger when Woody says he’s a toy. In the second movie, they had to bring in another Buzz Lightyear to start jumping again. And he had to convince his other self that it was a game. And here’s the Spanish Buzz [Toy Story 3]then the internal dialogue in [Toy Story 4]. This was the bedrock of something we knew we needed to repay.”

“Buzz is someone who takes his job very seriously, and he pretty much follows the rules,” the director added. “And he has a firm belief in himself. There are these metaphors for the kind of hero that we get to know, feed and play with. But it’s a mixture of weird sci-fi clichés. How do you make that more of a punchline? That was really a responsibility. [the] Movie.”

Lightyear premieres in theaters June 17.
