DC Celebrates George Perez’s Birthday With All-Star Honors

It doesn’t get more legendary than George Perez, and the capital is celebrating its 68th birthday (which takes place on June 9) with a special two-page spread featuring an all-star cast of artists. The two-page spread will be included in all DC books in June, and the honor scheme was designed by Dan Jurgens. Featuring a host of DC heroes alongside Perez himself, the characters in the artwork have been created by some of the biggest talents in the comics, including Jim Lee, Walter Simonson, Alex Ross, Todd McFarlane, Dave Gibbons, Nicola Scott, and Joelle Jones and Mikel Janin, Dan Mora, Jerry Ordway, Daniel Sampere and more, all colored by Hi-Fi.

“When I was asked to create a design and layout honoring George Perez and his many wonderful contributions to DC Comics over the years, I was truly honored,” said Dan Jurgens. “I have admired George’s work since I first saw him and have had the good fortune to work with him in different capacities, and on a number of projects. Most importantly, I have been able to see the way George treats fans and readers, always smiling, social and friendly. It has been a pleasure I’m thrilled to watch this cover come together and I’m sure everyone who contributed feels the same.”

The tribute features characters that Perez is synonymous with, including The New Teen Titans, Supergirl, The Justice League of America, Trigon, The Specter, Darkseid, Firestorm, Cheetah and The Amazons, Power Girl and Huntress, The Legion of Super-Heroes, and more. Accompanying the two-page spread on a separate page will be a key highlighting the characters and artists who drew them, and you can see both the spread of the two pages and the key in the images below.

A special George Perez tribute will also be shown as a variant cover of Dark Crisis #7, and each cover of that series will highlight one of the previous crisis events in DC history, beginning with Marvel’s Wolfman and Perez’s Crisis on Infinite Earths. There will also be a special version of the Dark Crisis #7 variant available from The Hero Initiative to raise money for one of Perez’s favorite charities. You can find the full rundown of the characters featured in the tribute below.

“George Perez is one of my favorite comic storytellers of all time,” said Joshua Williamson, Dark Crisis writer. “To say he’s a ‘great artist’ is a huge simplification.” His work on Crisis of Infinite Earths inspired much of my love for DC Comics. When I saw DC editors put together this awesome piece with so many amazing legendary artists celebrating George, I’m not going to lie, it was heartwarming. It is a great honor now that this honor is a cover for the crisis of darkness.”
