Chinchillazilla shared the tweet below on April 25, surprised that the singer bats actually use a sober language: Latin. Of course, like so many things in FromSoftware games, it’s no surprise that even these foes suffer from world events.
The original English translation of the song actually comes from an investigation with Reddit users u/Nyrun and u/MAGISTER-ORGANI. Through their combined efforts and knowledge, the two were able to obtain a transcript of the official Latin lyrics from Nora Cassidy, the vocalist who performed the song for the game. Here is the full English translation of bats Song of Lamentation, composed by Tsukasa Saitoh:
O that land, formerly blessed, is now withered.

Fascinated by the song of captivating creatures, u/Nyrun and u/MAGISTER-ORGANI have teamed up to accurately create an English translation of the song. u/MAGISTER-ORGANI’s work focused on providing the correct transcription of the song (and in doing so, he discovered that it actually used some strange pronunciation of Latin words), while both worked on interpreting the ancient language.
In the u/MAGISTER-ORGANI video, they posit that these singing bats may have once been puppetry that eventually became deformed. Paying for their own sins or those of their partners, these harpies are now destined to roam the earth as a human-like monster. In addition, the reference to “golden” could refer to Radahn or Malenia; This may explain why these bats remain hostile to other polluters, or anyone trying to fix the world for the gods who destroyed it in the first place.
