Boris Becker’s Grand Slam titles as tennis player sentenced to prison

How many Grand Slam titles has Boris Becker won in his career, as the German tennis legend was sentenced to prison for bankruptcy?

One of tennis’ most famous personalities, Boris Becker was sentenced to two and a half years in prison after being found guilty of hiding assets so he wouldn’t have to pay off outstanding debts.

The 54-year-old German Baker was found guilty earlier in April 2022 under the British Insolvency Act, BBC reports.

These included property in Germany as well as loans and technology stocks.

Judge Deborah Taylor imposed the verdict in Southwark Crown Court after a jury found him guilty, though he was acquitted of 20 other counts, including failure to deliver awards and medals from his illustrious career.

But how many major tournaments has Boris Becker won – and which one has he never won?

Boris Becker Grand Slams

In his singles career, Becker played 927 matches, won 713 matches and lost 214.

He was the world number one, reaching it in January 1991 – and taking gold in doubles at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona alongside Michael Stitch.

Becker turned professional in 1984, and appeared on the scene at Wimbledon a year later.

At just 17 years, 227 days old, Boris Becker claimed his first Grand Slam title on SW19 grass – at the time he was the youngest player to ever do so.

A year later, he defeated Evan Lendl to double and take his second Grand Slam title.

The right-handed Baker was claiming his third Wimbledon win in 1989, the same year he won the US Open at Flushing Meadows.

In 1991, Baker won on hard court again in Melbourne – the first of two Grand Slam titles.

Boris Becker’s sixth and final Grand Slam title came in 1996 – again in Australia – 11 years after the blonde-haired prodigy first came onto the scene.

Boris Becker’s Grand Slam results:

  • Australian Open – Winner 1991, 1996
  • Wimbledon – Winner – 1985, 1986, 1989
  • US Open – Winner – 1989

Becker did not complete the Grand Slam finals by winning all four titles.

His best result on clay for Roland Garros was a triple appearance in the semi-finals in 1987, 1989 and 1991.

Boss for another legend

After hanging up the racket, Baker turned his hand to critical work and coaching.

He was a familiar face in the BBC’s coverage of Wimbledon, alongside the likes of Sue Parker, Tim Henman and Andrew Castle.

In 2013, Becker was announced as the coach of Novak Djokovic as the Serbian began rewriting the record books.

Becker coached Djokovic for six titles between the 2014 Australian Open and the 2016 US Open.

This included the 2016 French Open – one of the four Grand Slams that Becker had not won in his playing days.
