What is Wordle? Where have you been in the past five months! It is nothing less than a viral gaming phenomenon that sprang out of nowhere at the beginning of 2022 to become the new favorite word game on the planet.
You’ll definitely see it if you spend any time on Twitter, where people share the distinct grid of yellow and green squares that is Wordle’s answer today, and their success (or otherwise) guessing it.
But how do you play Wordle? What are Wordle Grammar? How to earn in Wordle? What is a “starting word”? Where do all these alternatives and clones of Wordle come from?
Read on and I’ll explain what Wordle is and everything you need to know about it.
What is Wordle?
Wordle is a very simple game to play, but it has many killer features that raise it above the competition. here they are:
- You can only play one puzzle per day
- Everyone plays the same puzzle
- It’s easy to share your game on social media without spoiling the answer to others
Here are more details about the basics behind the game:
the aim
Your challenge is to guess a five letter word in six attempts. Each time you guess, you are told which of the letters you chose are in the target word, and whether they are in the correct place. And that’s it.
where do we play
You can play Wordle on a file New York Times Games Website. There are no apps – so if you see something that claims to be one, it’s fake.
It was originally hosted on Wordle site It was designed by creator Josh Wardle, but moved when the New York Times bought Wordle in early February. Some people think Wordle has gotten more difficult since the NYT acquisition, but it didn’t really happen. It’s (currently) still free to play and ad-free, just as it was in the beginning.
when do you play
Wordle can only be completed once per day. That’s right – there are no three hour Wordle sessions to waste while you’re supposed to be working. The game resets in the middle of the night every day, so if you’re really careful, you can stay awake and finish it while the others are asleep.
What are those networks on Twitter?
One of the biggest drivers behind Wordle’s success is encouraging social media sharing, but in a way that doesn’t spoil the surprise to anyone who didn’t play the puzzle that day.
When you click the Share button, you get a grid of yellow and green squares representing the path you took, but without revealing the actual characters. This makes it easy for people to post on Twitter or any other social media site, but without giving up on the game.
Since everyone plays the same puzzle, it’s easy for people to compare their answers with those of others – whether they’re strangers on Twitter or friends in a WhatsApp group.
It’s especially big on Twitter, where many hashtags and search terms pop up around and are trending regularly. You’ll often see “Wordle 312” or a similar trend, with “312” being the game number. And on a tough day, you’ll get a “Wordle 312 X”, where the “X” represents the fact that people have failed at it.
What are Wordle fonts?
The challenge of solving today’s puzzle is what drives people to Wordle, but it’s the fonts that keep them coming back. Wordle keeps track of how many games you’ve played and how many consecutive wins you’ve achieved; This is your line.
Many people have been playing since January, so it’s not uncommon for streaks to be around 100 now. But keep in mind that if you miss a game, your streak will be lost. In addition, your line is only tracked on one device, for example, if you usually play on your phone and then switch to a laptop for a day, your phone line will reset and your laptop line will start at 1. I discovered this many times.
What is Wordle Hard Mode?
Wordle doesn’t have many features as such, but there is a dark mode – and a hard mode. Hard mode forces you to play any correct letters based on subsequent guesses – so if you had a green S at the start, you’ll have to keep playing S at the start from then on. And if you have a yellow R in the word, all subsequent guesses will have to include an R somewhere as well.
What is WordleBot?
WordleBot is a tool made by NYT, and it’s great. It analyzes each game you play and gives you tips on what you could have done differently and how your game compares to the average. You can access it for free at The Upshot of the New York Times.
Who made Wordle?
Wordle was created by developer Josh Wardle, a guy you may have come across before; He was also the man behind the Reddit projects the button And place, All of them have been similarly wonderful – and ingeniously simple – experiments with Internet behaviour.
When did Wordle start?
Wardle created Wordle back in 2013 but the project lay dormant until closing, when he revived it for his puzzle-loving partner. It was released into the wild in October 2021, but increased in popularity in January 2022.
What are Wordle Grammar?
Wordle is such a simple game that there are hardly any rules. But here you are:
- You’ll guess the Wordle in six goes or less
- Every word you enter must be in the word list. There are over 10,000 words in this list, but only 2,309 (at the time of writing) are answers to a particular puzzle
- Correct letter turns green
- The color of the correct letter in the wrong place turns yellow
- Incorrect character turns gray
- Letters can be used more than once
- The answers are never in the plural form
- You must prove how smart you are by sharing your Wordle after you’ve finished it*

How to play Wordle – and win
Full disclosure: I’m not a genius. But I played every Wordle and only lost once, so I have some tips to share.
1. You’ll want to choose one of the best Wordle starting words, because getting that part right can make all the difference to your game. Bundles of analyzes have been written on this topic (many of them by me, admittedly), so look into that article linked to the full story. But here’s the basic theory.
The starting word in Wordle should be something that uses as many common Wordle characters as possible, including at least two vowels. So while AZYGY might be a smart word and a good choice in Scrabble, it’s not the best choice.
I used to start with TEARS every time, which has two ‘A’ and ‘E’, plus three common consonants in reasonable places, but I’ve since graduated to STARE; Same letters, but words that start with an S are more common than words that end with one letter, in Wordle at least, so it’s the best first choice.
2. Press the enter key and you will see the completely correct or partially correct letters, that is, they are in the target word but in the wrong place. In this typical game, number 200 from back in January, I was out of luck – the “T” was right on the spot, and both “E” and “R” were also present in the answer.
3. Next, you’ll want to think of another word that contains all the letters you’ve already said. The letters can be in a word more than once, but I’d stick to entering one each at this point, unless you really have good reason to believe you know what the word is.
Use other common characters at this point – so keep avoiding Qs, Z, Xs, even Ks, Hs, Js, etc. Stick to the low-value characters in Scrabble and you’ll be good to go. If you want more specific instructions, check out my analysis of each answer on Wordle, where I discuss topics like which letters are most common in Wordle, where specific letters are most likely to appear in a word, and which combinations occur most frequently.
In the case of the above game, I went with “D” and “I”, and added them to the “T”, “E” and “R” that I knew were already in the word to make TRIED.
4. Another success: It’s now confirmed that the “E” is in the right place, and the “I” is somewhere too. Using another common letter, “M,” I then went to TIMER.
5. Not right, but almost there. With only a few possible answers left, I chose TIGER…
6. And right, in 4/6 movements. Which is average, it seems.
Wordle clone
Yes, there certainly is – in fact there has been an explosion of Cambrian-like pedigree in Wordle versions over the past few months.
We’ve rounded up our favorites in our best article on Wordle clones and alternatives, but we’re also big fans of Quordle (which makes you play four games at once), Squabble (which lets you play against others online), and Waffle (which combines Wordle with crossword puzzles). ) and Hurdle (which makes you play five games in a row).
do you want more? You can also try Worldle (a geography-based clone), Heardle (Wordle but music), Framed (Wordle but movies) or Redactle (where you have to reveal a redacted Wikipedia page).
Obviously, you won’t get stuck playing things while waiting for the next Wordle puzzle.
Why is Wordle so addictive?
Wordle isn’t much different from a lot of word games available in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, but it presents a refreshing attitude for you, your time, and your money.
I play quite a few word games, and most of them have been ruined by the copious ads and frequent tips (if not blackmail) to spend money on in-app purchases. Running out of lives? Keep playing! For only £2.99 you can buy this chance to win another round! Oh unfortunately – but don’t worry, you’ll get this free sticker!
But Wordle is not. He doesn’t want to make money from you, and he doesn’t even want you to keep playing for hours.
“I’m a bit skeptical of mobile apps that demand your attention and send you push notifications to get more of your attention,” Wardle told the BBC.
In fact, that’s another refreshing thing about her. The binge culture is very real, and like most people, I’ll regularly finish a Netflix show, or a game, in long stretches over the course of a day or two, mostly when I’m asleep. I can’t do that with Wordle: one puzzle of the day is very littlebut that means the game is always up to date.
Of course, moving to the New York Times has some people feared that it would be changed making it so special, but so far at least those fears seem unfounded.
Will I still be playing Wordle this time next year? Probably not – but I certainly haven’t sated yet.
Can you cheat in Wordle?
Yes, you can. But you obviously shouldn’t.
However, if you really want to fool yourself and your poor friends on social media, you can easily open Wordle in an incognito browser window, take as many guesses as you need to complete it, and then go back to the window where you are logged into the profile and enter the correct word. Alternatively, you can search for Wordle’s answer today, and then pass it on as your own.
There, I did it in one guess. Aren’t you smart?
