iPhones have a good reputation because they cost a lot of money. But Apple has made remarkable efforts in recent years to provide iPhones at multiple prices to different buyers. When shopping for the best iPhones, you can save a lot of money by getting an older model, or opt for the more budget-friendly iPhone SE.
For now, the mid-range option to beat is the venerable iPhone 11, one of the best phones released in recent years. With excellent battery life, great cameras, and solid performance, the iPhone 11 remains a device that many should consider if they can’t afford one of the newer and more expensive models.
But rumors have it that Apple will halt iPhone 11 sales when the iPhone 14 launches in the fall. If so, there would be a huge gap between the $429 iPhone SE (2022) and the regular iPhone 14, assuming the new phone costs $799 as expected. 12 Once 14 comes out, but for a dedicated product that’s in the middle of the flagship iPhone and SE line, there’s likely to be a gap to be filled.
Why the iPhone 12 could replace the iPhone 11
I think the iPhone 12 would be a perfect fit for this role. It’ll be two years old once the iPhone 14 is released, so it’s no longer the latest and greatest. But it has modern features like an OLED display and 5G, features that the iPhone 11 lacks. The iPhone 12 cameras are also incredibly good and are a performance beast.
I doubt Apple will cut that price down by $499 — it’s currently $699 — since that new price will eat into the iPhone SE lunch. But if the iPhone 12 drops to that low – or close to it – budget-conscious iPhone buyers will get quite the treatment.
The iPhone 12 has a more modern design compared to the structure of the iPhone 8 dated SE. Battery life, while not impressive, still beats the SE. There’s also the ultrawide camera and night mode, which are things the cheapest iPhones lack.
Even $549 for an iPhone 12 would be a steal. Apple can also cut the iPhone 12 mini price down to $499 to get rid of stock, giving fans of small phones a huge boon with the modern iPhone design and camera quality upgrades. The iPhone 12 and 12 mini may fill the mid-range gap. Only Apple knows at this point.
A look at the iPhone 12
The prospect of saying goodbye to the iPhone 11 is certainly sad, but it makes a lot of sense. A phone from 2019 certainly has advantages, like old screen technology and 5G lag, so I’m surprised Apple stuck with it for so long.
Of course, we don’t have any confirmation on Apple’s plans yet, and we’re unlikely to hear anything for a few more months. We’ll just have to wait and see what Apple does. But from where I’m sitting, the iPhone 12’s $499 – or even $549 – price tag would be great.
