Apple delays new Will Smith movie due to Chris Rock slapping controversy

It is reported that Apple has delayed the release of Release, an upcoming movie starring Will Smith, after the recent controversy over slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars. Although the movie didn’t have an official release date, it was expected to release sometime this fall, but it’s now believed to be the “unspoken fact” that the movie will start sometime in 2023. According to New report from diverseIt appears that there have been discussions underway about a possible launch in the fall, but this is “highly unlikely”.

ReleaseDirected by Antoine Fuqua, it follows Peter (performed by Smith), a slave who escapes from Louisiana after being flogged nearly to death. Peter outsmarts the cold-blooded poachers led by Vasily, as he makes his way north, where he joins the Union army. The movie is based on the true story of a runaway slave named Gordon. Photographs of his bare back, severely flogged by a supervisor, were published around the world in 1863, giving the abolitionist movement evidence of the cruelty of American slavery.

The film was about to be Smith’s first theatrical release after the controversy, with some sources believing it could have led to the actor winning back-to-back Academy Awards, having won this year’s Best Actor award for King Richard. The report cites both the slap controversy, as well as past production delays and Apple’s already complete movie slate, as possible reasons behind the move.

One of the production delays occurred when the film moved production to Louisiana, in protest of Georgia’s voting restriction laws.

“In this moment, the nation is coming to terms with its history and trying to eradicate the remnants of institutional racism to achieve true racial justice,” the filmmakers said in a joint statement at the time. “We cannot in good conscience provide economic support to a government that enacts regressive voting laws designed to restrict voter access. Georgia’s new voting laws remind us of the voting barriers passed at the end of Reconstruction to prevent many Americans from voting. Unfortunately we feel compelled to move our film production out of Georgia to another state.
