A couple of weeks ago, Samsung seemed intent on streamlining its smartwatch line with the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5. There will be no Galaxy Watch 5 Classic, and instead we’ll be treated to a Regular and Pro model.
At the time, I wrote that this was likely just a brand exercise and the rotating bezel—a fan-favorite feature and Samsung USP—was likely to be safe. But now it looks like Samsung might not have plans to simplify the line after all, like Galaxy Club We’ve come up with three code names and model numbers that indicate that Samsung will introduce three different wearables later this year.
First, there’s the Heart-S with model number SM-R90X. It’s the smallest of the bunch, at 40mm and 42mm sizes, making it probably the next-gen version of the Galaxy Watch 4. Then there’s the Heart-L – or SM-R91X – which is slightly larger at 44mm and 46mm, and feels like the successor to the Galaxy Watch. 4 Classic is elusive.
Finally, there’s the Heart-Pro which packs the model number SM-R92X and appears to only come in one size. The size mentioned wasn’t mentioned, but since we’ve heard previously that the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro will come with a massive 572mAh battery, I’m thinking at least 48mm, and most likely more.
Galaxy Watch 5 from Schrödinger
If there are already three watches, as the model numbers and code names indicate, it is unlikely that Samsung will abandon the Classic for the fifth generation of Galaxy Watches. So why did an earlier report suggest that the company would do exactly that?
One way to square the two contradictory reports is to say that there are actually three watches, but the Galaxy Watch 5 Classic isn’t one of them — either because it’s called something else but is essentially the same, or because Samsung is doing something new and different.
Only that doesn’t actually work, because the original SamMobile Report He was blunt: “Samsung will release two variants of its upcoming smartwatch: Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro.” It’s not just that the Classic is not included – a third has specifically been left out.
So one of those reports will be proven wrong later this year. If Samsung sticks to its previous wearable release schedule, we’ll know which ones in August, when the Galaxy Watch 5 will likely debut alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4.
