Throughout the 2022 regular season and until the NBA playoffs, the Celtics wore the number 24 on their jerseys.

The white number is sewn on the left shirt shoulder on a black stripe.
Legendary Celtics honor Sam Jones
but why? Well, it’s a tribute to former Celtic Sam Jones, who won ten championships with Boston and was an integral part of their famous dynasty.
Jones played for the Celtics from 1957-58 to 1968-1969. The shooting ranger hasn’t lost a Game 7 series, and his number 24 was retired by the Celtics in 1969—it’s hung in the rafters today.
Jones was the first black basketball player to be inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. In 1996, he was named one of the 50 Greatest NBA Players of All Time.
Sadly, Jones passed away on December 30, 2021 at the age of 88. At the time, they held a minute’s silence for Jones before the game against the Phoenix Suns.
2022 could be a special year for the Celtics
The Boston Celtics 2022 team has a chance to replicate some of the success Jones has had with the franchise.
Despite facing off against the much-favoured Brooklyn Nets in the first round of players, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart were able to see Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.
The Celtics are one of the strongest and most ferocious defensive units in the league, and at Emi Odoka they have one of the brightest young coaches in the league.
Beating Giannis and Bucks wouldn’t be a feat, but the Celtics certainly can.
Game three takes place in Milwaukee tonight (May 7).
