According to the announcement, Reiner will return to direct the sequel and reprise his part from “director” Marty Deberghi in the original satirical film that directed the first. Michael McCain, Harry Shearer and Christopher Guest are also set to return as their characters from fantasy rockers David St. Hobbins, Derek Smalls and Nigel Tofnell. According to Rayner, the new film will see his character get a second chance to make a movie on the band, which he says “was upset with the first movie.”

“The plan is to make a sequel that comes on the 40th anniversary of the original film and I can tell you hardly a day goes by without someone saying, ‘Why don’t you do another one?'” Reiner Trading revealed. “For many years, we’ve said, ‘Nah.’ It wasn’t until we had the right idea how to do it. Reiner also revealed new details about the sequel’s plot, stating that the band would find themselves under contract for another concert, something they signed on with former manager Ian Faith (the late Tony Hendra). With Hendra dying in real life, it will be his character’s widow who enforces the contract on the band, resulting in them having to reform and perform again.

“They’ve played with Albert Hall, they’ve played at Wembley, all over the country and in Europe,” added Reiner. “They haven’t spent any time together recently, and that became the basis. The idea was that Ian Faith, who was their manager, passed away. In fact, Tony Hendra passed away. Ian’s widow inherited a contract that owes them another concert, says Spinal Tap.
