DJI Avata could be the company’s first indoor drone. Until now, all DJI drones were supposed to be launched outdoors, but that could all change soon. Rumors have it that the company is developing a new drone designed for indoor spaces and for capturing tight shots in enclosed areas.
Here’s everything we’ve heard about the rumored DJI Avata so far.
DJI Avata: Rumored Release Date
The DJI Avata could be released as early as this summer – July or August – according to Gizmodo, who originally spotted the reports on two trusted Twitter accounts, bargains And OsitaLV.
Prices were not disclosed, or even speculated.
DJI Avata: Design
The most obvious difference between the leaked images of other Avata and DJI aircraft is that this model has rotors that are protected by built-in covers. On DJI’s outdoor drones, you can buy protective cages for the rotors, but they are removable, whereas here they are an integral part of the design. This makes sense, given that this drone is supposed to be flown indoors.
In the same tweet, DealsDrone also says that the Avata will weigh around 500 grams (about 1.1 pounds); That’s twice the weight of the DJI Mini 3 Pro and DJI Mini 2 – and it also means that Avata must be registered with the FAA.

DealsDrone also suggests that the Avata’s camera will be comparable to the Mini 3 Pro, which has a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor and f/1.7 aperture sensor, and can take 48MP photos and videos at up to 4K/60fps.
However, in another departure from DJI’s other drones, the Avata’s camera appears to be stationary and not biaxial, meaning pilots will have to steer the drone in the direction they want to photograph.
Avata’s design, along with speculation that it could be used with FPV goggles, suggests it could be DJI’s entry into the so-called cinewhoop class — small, fast, maneuverable drones that can capture acrobatic indoor videos. The best example of this is the video “Right Up Our Alley” filmed in 2021 by Jay Christensen, who has gone on to shoot a number of other similar videos, such as NHL All-Star And to get Players PGA Championship.
As such, the DJI Avata will be a lot different – and possibly much more expensive – than the Snap Pixy, another recently announced $230 drone aimed at taking selfies and photos.
DJI Avata Predictions
It’s too early to speculate on the success or failure of a rumored drone. However, if launched, the DJI Avata is looking to meet the needs of a very specific drone pilot — even more specialized than the DJI FPV drone, which the company released last year. The Avata could also be launched along with a new set of FPV goggles, which will be essential for flying this drone indoors and around tight spaces.
Like the FPV drone, the Avata could be DJI’s way of introducing a drone to those who want to try their hand at indoor drone videography, but don’t yet want to build their own drone. It remains to be seen if this is a successful model.
