The Hisense U8H Mini LED TV is one of the first two Mini LED TVs from the brand, and it is personally impressive. With Hisense known for offering some of the best value TVs on the market, the U8H is one shopper to watch out for this year.
Although it’s not yet available for purchase, the Hisense U8H will eventually replicate those of the Hisense U8G Android TV but offer a 75-inch configuration. The larger the screen, the easier it may be to recognize the benefits of the Mini LED panel for brightness and color accuracy. Switching to Google TV and moving towards a modern design are other highlights, from what we saw.
We still need to put this set to the test to see how it compares to the best TVs, but this hands on Hisense U8H Mini LED TV review has all our first impressions, plus everything else you might want to know about the set.
Hisense U8H Mini LED TV Price and Availability
The Hisense U8H Mini LED TV is slated to be available in the summer of 2022, although we don’t have an exact release date yet. Other Hisense 2022 TVs, including the Hisense U7H TV and Hisense U6H TV, may be available soon although none of these devices use small LEDs.
Offering a larger configuration compared to the U8G’s range of sizes, the U8H’s configurations include 55, 65 and 75 inches. We don’t have exact prices for each configuration but Hisense has confirmed that all models cost under $1,500.
Hisense U8H Mini LED TV Design
Hisense TVs haven’t always looked as stylish as the best OLED TVs or even many of the best QLED TVs, but the U8H’s design is the most modern we’ve seen from the brand so far. It’s a slim package, surrounded by metal in a way that’s reminiscent of the LG G2 OLED TV from the Gallery series, which we reviewed recently.
The set can be hung on the wall or standing on a pair of stable feet. On the back, the port array includes 4 HDMI ports, two of which are HDMI 2.1 (up to 4K @ 120Hz) and one that supports eARC. It also features two USB ports, an RF antenna, a digital audio output, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The U8H has an ATSC 3.0 tuner that supports 4K broadcasts in markets where NextGen TV is also available.
Hisense U8H Mini LED TV Performance and Features
Small LED lights are smaller than the average LED, and the smaller size means that more of them can be placed in the same area. A full-array LED TV can pack thousands of tiny LEDs behind an LCD panel. Benefit? Hundreds of separate dimming zones (in the case of the U8G, 500) which, when properly controlled, provide advanced clarity, color, and brightness.
A lot of what we look for in Mini LED TVs is how the processor works on them. While watching some standard videos on the Hisense U8H, the color volume and level of detail on the iguana stood out, especially for a budget brand TV. While the overall brightness successfully wowed us, we may have noticed some subtle inconsistencies in contrast control around a section close to the flame, a notoriously challenging subject. However, we’ll need to spend more time watching movies on the U8H to get a realistic sense of picture performance. We’ll also see if it lives up to the company’s claims about 1,500 nits brightness in Tom’s Guide TV tests.
Hisense U8G Mini LED TV benefits from Dolby Vision IQ, as well as Dolby Atmos sound. Other than that, the set’s 2.1.2 speaker system with subwoofer on the back is fairly standard for this type of TV. You’ll have the option of pairing it with one of the best speakers to elevate your entertainment setup, like the new $279 Sonos Ray.
Hisense is also touting the U8H as a great choice for gamers, since it comes with most of the same gaming features found on premium TVs like Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), low auto latency, and NVIDIA FreeSync.
Hisense U8H Mini LED TV Interface and Remote Control
This year, Hisense has upgraded all of its TVs from Android TV to the latest Google TV platform. Rival TCL has a range of Google TV devices and the platform is available via Google Chromecast with Google TV (one of the best streaming devices,) but the number of TVs with the built-in system is still limited.
Not only does Google TV provide access to the best streaming services, but it also offers deep integration with Nest smart home devices and the Google Assistant. It works with Alexa too, if that’s your assistant of choice.
The remote is compact and features a dedicated Google Assistant launcher, as well as launchers for Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube, Disney Plus, Tubi and Peacock. These buttons are useful if you use this selection of streaming services often. Hisense said the remote control also has a backlight option — we haven’t done its test work but hope to see it during internal testing.
Hisense U8H Mini LED TV Overview
Hisense U8H Mini LED TV is perhaps the most exciting brand launch since the Hisense name started gaining worldwide attention. While there are plenty of Mini LED TVs on the market from the likes of TCL, Samsung, and LG (and Sony, as of this year), we can’t help but think about how they can make value TVs more attractive. We’ve seen a similar trend with OLED, which started as a premium technology but later moved to an easily accessible price point.
If it gets strong marks in our further tests, we may be able to name the Hisense U8H Mini LED TV as one of the best TVs of the year. Until then, check out our list of the best 4K TVs you can buy.
