A rumored professional version of Apple Studio Display may arrive later than initially thought, and the Covid-19 pandemic may be to blame.
Back in March, show analyst Ross Young He claimed that Apple was working on a 27-inch Mini-LED display with a June release date. Originally thought to be for the all-in-one iMac, Young has since suggested that the board be a standalone Studio Display Pro that sits between a standard $1,499 studio display and the $5,000 Pro Display XDR in Apple’s line of products.
Young now has an estimated time of arrival for commission. Thanks to the Covid-19 lockdowns in China, the screen won’t be revealed until at least October.
“The 27-inch Mini-LED display that was due to be produced at Quanta in Shanghai which has been shut down has been delayed,” chirp. “Production is in the process of being moved to a different location and has been delayed. It now looks like an October release.”

Mini-LED technology is something Apple has been keen to push in its premium products, introducing it to both the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and the 16-inch MacBook Pro last year. Display technology offers diodes one-fifth the size of standard LEDs, which range from 200 to 600 µm in width. Thanks to the higher densities of diodes, mini-LED panels can provide tightly controlled areas of light, resulting in better contrast and deeper blacks.
But there’s a reason mini-LED has been limited to Apple’s more expensive consumer products. It’s not a cheap addition, so expect any Studio Display Pro to cost significantly more than Apple’s $1,499 fee for the current studio display — especially if Apple is able to add 120Hz ProMotion support.
When Young asked directly if he knew the price, he was ominous replied: “No, but it is expensive.”
In fact, it was this cost that led one of Young’s peer analysts to conclude that Apple won’t be releasing a Mini-LED display in the near future. “Apple may not release new Mini-LED products this year due to cost concerns,” Ming-Chi Kuo chirp Back in March.
However, if Young is right, we can only speculate on how high that price will be. But with the $5,000 Pro Display XDR, we know Apple isn’t afraid of the displays’ premium prices. In fact, Young earlier speculated that the rumored Studio Display Pro might eventually end up replacing Apple’s high-end display, given the newer screen technology. It may replace XDR as the new MiniLED display will have about twice as many MiniLED zones and >7 times more LEDs. chirp in March.
An October release date could bring rumors back to what could be a busy holiday period for Apple. In addition to the supposed September launch of the iPhone 14 and Apple Watch 8, Apple is said to be planning the 2022 MacBook Air to serve as a “nice holiday seller” and there’s talk of a new HomePod as well. Powerful Apple fans may want to start saving now.
