Warning: This story contains spoilers for the Sunday Providence episode of Fear the Walking Dead. Half a season after Alicia Clark (Alicia Debnam Curry) declares war on her ex-boyfriend Victor Strand (Coleman Domingo), vowing to take over the tower that rules him in a nuclear zombie apocalypse, the conflict is over in Providence. Things get complicated when a confused and deceitful Daniel Salazar (Robin Blades) storms the tower on a misguided mission to rescue Ophelia, and Wes (Colby Holman) leads a ranger’s revolt against Strand to take the tower for themselves.
Still suffering from the side effects of a pedestrian’s bite and amputation, a feverish Alicia agreed to stay in the tower with Strand if he called for a ceasefire and turned off the beacon. But Wes’s rebellion continues, forcing Alicia, Strand, and Daniel to team up to take out the roof and electrify the light causing the irradiated infantry to escape the muzzle of a warhead.
Armed conflict continued on the upper floors of the tower, with Wes killing Alicia and Standard if Daniel did not open fire on the Rangers. Wes shoots (but fails to kill) Daniel, opening himself up for a confrontation with Alicia.
“I once saved your life. We both did,” said Alicia Lewis, who defected to the Strand team earlier in the half season. “You believed in us once before. And I’m just asking you to do the same–” Before Alicia could convince Wes to undo the guards he had ordered to kill his former friends, Strand stabbed Wes dead with a sword.
Although Strand admitted that he loved Alicia like his daughter, and later helped get Morgan’s group into safety, he hesitated to turn off the tower’s light. “You’ll never forgive me, will you?” asked Alicia Strand. “Even if I turn it off, even if I help you save everyone, the damage is already done. It will never be enough. It will never make you love me.”
Alicia admitted that might be the case, but killing Strand and Wes was the final blow to their friendship. Their argument turned into a physical fight, which ended with the lighthouse being extinguished – and the roof of the tower, a ramp that would be resolved in the Fear of walking deadEpisode 100“Amina”.

“I think what was very tragic in that moment was that Alicia felt like she was reaching out to Wes and that she was starting to attract his best angels again,” said Ian Goldberg, co-host of the show at AMC+. Strand looked at Wes and saw someone who would never step down and that he would have to kill to get to the surface.”
Goldberg explained that Strand “felt he was doing something really good for her,” but for Alicia, Strand killing Wes “was proof that Strand hadn’t changed, which is why she didn’t trust him.” “So it is this horrific, tragic moment of conflicting impulses and understandings between each other that ultimately leads to the confrontation we see on the surface.”

“Breaking the lighthouse is a metaphor for Strand himself. He is shattered by everything that has happened, by Alicia’s lack of faith in him. I think Strand feels that this is the end for him. There is nothing left for him to do, and he will die having done the worst possible thing and become the worst version of himself.
