Thanks to directing movies like opinionAnd vileAnd SorceryDirector James Wan is considered by many to be one of the most ambitious and compelling horror voices working in storytelling, with his cinematic style so impressive that he moved on to big-budget action films like fast 7 And Aquaman. Last year, Wan presented his latest disturbing novel with malignant, a project whose unique combination of traits immediately earned him a passionate following. With its penchant for inspiring vast worlds, many fans also hope that this movie will be just the first of many entries into this exotic world. malignant Now released on Blu-ray in 4K Ultra HD.

ComicBook.com: For about a year now, this question has been bothering me malignant. I live in Seattle, and while I was watching the movie, I was watching the movie in the North Beacon Hill neighborhood. So you can imagine me watching this movie in my house on North Beacon Hill, wondering why, of all the Seattle neighborhoods like Ballard, Fremont, Queen Anne, and all the great neighborhoods, why is North Beacon Hill specifically mentioned in malignant? What’s the point?

James Wan: I wish I had more to say other than it’s a great looking neighborhood. It’s cinematic, just the way she layered it, like houses on hills and all of that made it look really cool. Also, the story fits perfectly. In the end it was just the right look for what we wanted there with the leafy streets and richer quality of it.

Fine, thank you. I appreciate your answer because it freaked me out to have them say my zone while watching it in my house.

This is really cool. So you haven’t seen it anywhere else, you were already there when you saw the movie? that’s cool.

when malignant He managed to attract fans in a very unique way compared to something like Sorcery, which I feel is more accessible to a slightly wider audience. people who love malignant really love malignantAnd it wasn’t for everyone, so did you anticipate that while you were developing the film? Knowing the mix of genres, story and ambitions, it won’t be for everyone, but will it really connect with certain audiences?

Well, getting into it, I knew it was a very specific kind of horror movie that I wanted to make. I knew I didn’t necessarily go into making a candid, all-encompassing, mainstream movie I think I’d become known for. But I’ve always said that everything I made was personal stuff to me making the movies I wanted to watch, at the end of the day.

even in opinion It was a weird little horror movie that just happened to catch on fire with the general public, and so I wanted to go back and make a movie like opinionLike vilethat, again, vile It was a weird, low-budget horror movie, and because I got into it malignant With this mindset, I knew I wanted to do something in the same spirit vile And opinion.

I think I just made a very charged movie in that direction that the rest of the mainstream audience was like, ‘What is this movie? We thought we’d get another superhero ghost story from James like,’ Sorcery“But instead they got something different, and I think that turned off a whole lot of people, but like I said, I feel like I’m in between my big films, and that’s where I get the chance to take a chance on something different, don’t you make a movie that sticks Just by the standard of commercial filmmaking. I still wanted to make a commercial. It’s still a movie with a traditional beginning, middle and end, but that doesn’t mean I can’t have all this really fun stuff in between.

You mentioned all these other films, opinionAnd vileAnd Sorcery Which just became these popular culture horror movie franchises of the past two decades. You obviously wouldn’t expect something like this to happen. You don’t come close to making those movies to say, “Okay, that’s one, but here’s the other ten I want to make too,” and you won’t realize the untapped potential until you spend time with those movies. I suppose it’s the same with malignant , I wanted to tell this story, but now that I’ve got more time, I’ve been playing in other sandboxes like AquamanIs your mind starting to return to it? malignant To think, “Could there be more stories to tell in this world? Can we explore other topics in this research facility?”

That’s pretty much what I’ve been doing right from the start, and I didn’t really think much of that, “Oh, there’s going to be a sequel to this,” but I’m trying, with all my films, to have an idea of what the bigger world would look like, the parachute universe, if you will. That way, when I’m making this particular movie, I know what’s going on in every moment of the movie, every moment of telling the story, if you will.

Because I know the larger world the story is in, there are likely to be other stories to tell, and they are usually dictated to what the audience wants. If they want more stories, then I have more stories to go through. This is my style, even all the way back to my first movie opinionDo I know the greater world, like [writer] for me [Whannell] And I knew the larger world, and if we were lucky enough to tell other stories, we had stories ready to tell.

the same with vilethe same with Sorcery. In case SorceryIt’s more clear, isn’t it? As Warrens, it’s based on these real-life people who have investigated many cases, so this is a much more straightforward case to pull off. But the same with Aquaman the world as well. I make this world, and then inside it, you can tell many different stories within the universe.

It seems safe to tell fans, “Hey, fans, if you want more malignantKeep telling people how much you love Gabriel and want more malignant. “

Well, that is exactly it. I joked, for audiences that want more movies, you should start a big movement. Start a hashtag from A malignant sequel.

Hi, Between the Photoshops of Gabriel Appearing at the Met Gala, and the Fangoria Chainsaw Award for Best Wide Release Film, James, I Think malignantIt works fine, but I’ll help give that extra push. Finally, speaking of these major realms, these bigger privileges, as I mentioned Aquaman And there was going to be a Trench-Black Manta themed horror movie, do you think some of the horror ideas you were planning could become his thing? Can you use some of those bigger concepts you’ve been hoping to explore in this spin-off and reimagining them for their non-DC Comics horror movie?

Listen, I feel like everything I come up with, everything I do, if I come up with something that I don’t end up using, it doesn’t mean I can’t be inspired to use that in a different way. That’s my problem, is that I come up with a lot of ideas and have a lot of ideas just creeping in, but I obviously can’t use them all. So I would say about all the different ideas and ideas I came up with, I ended up using maybe 20-30% of them in my work, and so I have a drawer full of ideas that could develop into something else.

Well, I can’t wait to see your cross-cutting film where every James Wan idea is put into it, and a tribute to A24. Everything everywhere at onceit’s called Everything is everywhere in Wan-ce.

very nice. I love that. It should be the title of your article. What about that? Now that’s a good title.
