Summary of the new season from Amsterdam

The fourth season of New Amsterdam premiered on NBC on September 21, 2021 and after starting nicely enough, life in New Amsterdam descended into chaos.

In the early episodes, Dr. Helen Sharp revealed that she wanted to go back to the UK and Max decided he wanted to go with her as the couple finally met after years of romance.

However, the couple’s plan is complicated by the arrival of Veronica Fuentes who is brought in as New Amsterdam’s new medical director and tasked with balancing the books and transforming the struggling hospital by any means necessary.

Veronica’s ruthless approach led to Max slipping into a corner of the hospital budget, something he wasn’t helped by a cyberattack on New Amsterdam in Episode 8 that ended with several cast members losing their jobs.

After the show’s Christmas break, New Amsterdam continues without two of its most beloved characters as Helen and Max complete their move to the UK but with Max left struggling to find his place in an unfamiliar health system, he quickly returns to New Amsterdam to stop Veronica Fuentes from undoing all His good works.

In January 2020, halfway through season two, NBC boldly renews New Amsterdam for three more seasons (3, 4 and 5), which means the show will run for at least five installments.

But due to viewership numbers steadily declining, a decision was made to end the show rather than introduce another renewal.

When New Amsterdam returns for its fifth season during the 2022/23 TV season, the medical drama will continue for the last 13 episodes before being finally concluded.
