Microsoft just confirmed the news we’ve all been waiting for – it’s developing an Xbox game streaming dongle. After several rumors circulating about its release date and features, Microsoft has confirmed it Windows Central (Opens in a new tab) It’s running on a “modern HDMI streaming device that powers Xbox Game Pass and its cloud gaming service.”
The device is currently codenamed “Keystone” and Microsoft says that based on what it has learned so far, it plans to “focus” away from Keystone in its current form to develop a newer version.
“We’ll take what we’ve learned and refocus our efforts on a new approach that will allow us to bring Xbox Cloud Gaming to more gamers around the world in the future,” Microsoft said in a statement.
Inaccurately translating, Microsoft will need some time before its project goes live.
Keystone will be able to connect to any TV or monitor without the need for a console to access Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft also mentions its “commitment to lowering Xbox content limits across low-cost hardware,” according to Windows Central.
This plug-and-play device can save users hundreds of dollars, as it appears to be designed to stream the same games that an Xbox can play while costing less than the price of a new Xbox. The Xbox Series X is easier to find than the PS5 these days, but it still requires gamers to pay big money.
Microsoft has also hinted at the Xbox TV app in the past, which can see the light of day along with a streaming stick. While the schedule for the streaming stick and TV app remains unclear, Microsoft has an Xbox and Bethesda game show on June 12 — maybe we’ll find out more about the new technology then?
