As a leading man in Hollywood over the past several decades, Tom Cruise is pretty much accustomed to being in the driver’s seat—or shall we say—in the pilot’s seat. He is famous for performing his stunts in his movie, which includes stunts for his revenge role in the latest release Top Gun: Maverick. Recently, there was talk that the actor may have slightly over the mark when it comes to Kate Middleton’s royal family member at the London premiere. However, was it such a big deal as some were making it?
Simply, the file Top Gun: Maverick The premiere on May 19 was a long-awaited ordeal. Not only has it been obvious that many years have passed since the original movie came out in 1986, but there have been many delays to the release of the new iteration due to COVID. Finally, though, he appeared to see the light of day, and it was a truly royal order. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended the show and were, basically, dripping in style. However, it wasn’t their sparkly outfits that caught the attention of online onlookers – Tom Cruise was helping Kate Middleton climb some stairs, as you can see below.
Now, under normal circumstances, helping a lady run up the stairs in America might be seen as a very polite gesture. Unfortunately, since this is the British royals we’re talking about, Tom Cruise’s gesture has been questioned by a few online as a possible mistake. In other words, you can’t just touch a royal hand, even if you’re the star of the movie’s night-event.
In general, the rules of etiquette at this point are not entirely clear. Queen Elizabeth is supposed to offer her own hand so someone can touch it. But this is the queen. While many people have noticed the alleged gaffe online, according to Yahoo UKThe King’s executive editor, Omar Scobey, is a little different for other royals. He said,
He went on to say that a lot of ideas about royal protocol are actually just misconceptions created by the public. Apparently, it was a huge mistake that the wife of the second in line to the British throne fell down the same stairs. So really, Maverick is proactively saving the day again, am I right?
Regardless, the moment itself was relatively harmless. Tom Cruise only touched Kate Middleton’s hand for a few seconds. Right after that, the two of them were seen going up more stairs and the Duchess had already moved the clutch to the other hand. No harm, no harm.
However, the supposed incident of Kate Middleton wasn’t the only surprising moment during Top Gun: Maverick Premiere in Merry-old-London. After rumors that they were dating while making the movie, Tom Cruise star Hayley Atwell appeared with another person on her arm: her mother. Like the royal etiquette incident, Atwell’s situation surfaced and it ran through the networks quickly, too.
In true Pete Mitchell style, Tom Cruise didn’t let the gossip tease him at all. Only the night before all this, Top Gun: Maverick It was a screening at the Cannes Film Festival, which in fact saw the 59-year-old shower a standing ovation for his role in the film, with his character now serving as a coach for the next generation of Top Gun graduates. Cruz was also awarded an honorary Palme d’Or on the same night for his outstanding work.
The sequel takes more than three decades to make, so it’s only natural that there’s a lot of hype surrounding it. And Tom Cruise has several days of bounce photos to celebrate his release on the 2022 movie schedule. Audiences can check out how it stacks up to its predecessor in theaters now. (Psst, CinemaBlend thought it was 4 star awesome…)
