Charles Gibson was born Charles de Wolff Gibson on March 9, 1943 in Evanston, Illinois. He is the son of Burdette Gibson and Georgiana Low. Charles grew up in Washington, D.C. and attended Sedwill Friends School. After graduating from private college prep school, Gibson earned a B.A. in History from Princeton University in 1965. As an undergraduate, he joined the Princeton Tower Club, worked as news director for the school’s radio station, WPRB-FM, and wrote a graduate thesis titled “Problems of Land and Head Money in Ireland before the famine.
