Gotham Knights Dev revises the Batgirl Backstory to address harmful disabilities

Developer Gotham Knights He revised Batgirl’s backstory after fans criticized the game for its use of harmful disability tropes. In the comics, Batgirl is shot in the spine by the Joker and then is largely seen in a wheelchair. Depending on the version of the character, she becomes an oracle, the eyes and ears of Batman while he is in the field. She is able to use her technical intelligence to be a major asset to Batman without getting into combat. Batgirl’s biography Gotham Knights It indicates that she was seriously wounded in some kind of combat, although it is unclear with whom. The bio indicated that she was able to return to active duty as Batgirl after training, something some fans have struggled with as not as easy as doing some training to recover from a serious injury that puts someone in a wheelchair. This has been taken as a malicious trope across the media and it appears that Warner Bros. realize that.

In a recent question and answer, Gotham Knights Creative Director Patrick Redding stated that they heard feedback from fans and worked with AbleGamers “to learn about different types of spinal injuries and the potential for someone to regain mobility.” Her resume has since been revised to note that she has undergone extensive rehabilitation and training. Redding indicated that her background will differ from the comics, she has undergone physical therapy, multiple surgeries, pain management, and will wear clothes with back supports built into them. Some of her rehabilitation will also be depicted in the game itself.

In the end, it appears that Warner Bros. She wanted to create a more realistic picture of Batgirl’s recovery and not make it clear with a simple training montage. It also looks like she’ll be dealing with the aftermath of her injury in-game, showing that it doesn’t completely go away after surgery and physical therapy.

Gotham Knights Scheduled to be released on October 25, 2022 for Xbox Series X | S, PlayStation 5 and PC. The latest generation versions of the game have recently been cancelled.
