On this day in 2021, Bo Burnham released “Inside” and changed the game forever

On this day in 2021, Bo Burnham released one of the greatest comedy specials ever on the Netflix streaming platform, The Inside.

At this time last year, the world was still in the grips of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and many of us wondered if we would ever get it out of various lockdowns into the real world again. Fortunately, a Jesus-like figure emerged from the darkness to bring light, laughter, and tears to our whole lives, the only one Bo Burnham.

As a disclaimer, I’m a huge fan of Bo Burnham and have followed his career for the better part of a decade from his YouTube debut to his lively arena tours. Thus, this is not a neutral analysis of The Inside, but rather a celebration of creative genius and a characteristic that remains one of the best titles on the entire Netflix platform, one year later.

Bo Burnham’s indoor show turns one year old

on May 30The tenth2021, netflix chest Bo Burnham’s latest stand-up comedy special “Inside” has been broadcast around the world, and unsurprisingly, the special became a worldwide hit almost overnight.

The special, as it describes itself, is a little ubiquitous, but that hasn’t stopped old fans of Bo or newcomers to his comedic style from flooding social media with their own songs to sing along.

As of May 2022, the Special Edition maintains an exceptional 8.6/10 IMDBwith scores of 94% and 93% on rotten tomatoes’ Tomatometer and average audience rating respectively. Critics were equally blown away by “The Inside” giving five stars out of five Watchman The A-rated of Indiewire Among many, many others.

“Go ahead, think about the basis of your entire daily existence. Writing this, I’m part of the problem. And yet we’re here. (Content Alert: If this was a typical review, I’d give it a go.” inside a a- For its astonishing originality and powerful pathos. The “subtraction” is in order to make me temporarily in touch with my inner life.” — Kristen Baldwin, via Entertainment Weekly.

As with every one of his specials, the songs and stage performances from Bo, real name Robert Pickering Burnham, are brilliant, catchy, and filled with incredibly deep lyrics.

However, we’re not the only ones who think “Inside” featured some really great songs. In fact, the album “The Songs” was released alongside the comedy special peaked #1 on US Billboard and spent 50 weeks on the highly competitive charts!

for every RiaThe album was also certified gold for selling 500,000 units — a feat for any comedian, not to mention a full lineup of tracks from one particular song.

What makes the “inside” so special?

“Inside” is much more than a catchy collection of songs commenting on political, social, and personal issues in Poe’s life, it’s a storytelling performance that truly moves viewers.

Bo’s ability to successfully joke, perform, direct and edit content on current issues with years of hindsight and analysis is something that particularly stands out to me; Even after an entire year and countless re-watches during that time.

The songs and hit lines both focus on specific moments in this reclusive comedian’s life, but a story that unfolds over the course of a special track somehow comments on the act of writing those songs and jokes…and her “definition” all works so well.

Interestingly, the speed with which Bo is able to analyze a given moment and respond to it with a punch on his own, often at his own expense in “Inside”, may be one of the reasons why some of his most viewed content on YouTube are “clip collages”. Being quick is one thing, but combine that with months of planning and you’ve got a comedy special that will stand the test of time.

Then we have the emotional value associated with the special “inside”, which depicts a creative genius slowly losing his mind in solitude. Almost all of us have at some point been going to struggle with mental health during coronavirus-related lockdowns around the world, even if a few of us are too stubborn to publicly admit it.

For millions of viewers, “Inside” was the first time that our thoughts about current conditions were expressed in a way that made sense and was connected to our inner struggles. Perhaps all expressions of mental health problems and their solutions should be on the tune of Bo Burnham’s jingle?

There will surely be some viewers who despise and laugh at the special comics that carry any kind of emotional weight in our lives – who believe that “inside” is content that can’t have any real-world effects on who you are.

However, Bo and his pandemic splendor will forever hold a special place in the hearts of every comic book fan. The songs are still great, the jokes are still going downhill, the production is still amazing, and most importantly, the exact special stays…special.
