Warning: This story contains spoilers for Stranger Things 4, now streaming on Netflix. “You begin to believe all those things that they say: This city is damned. The devil lives here in Hawkins.” So says a resident of Hawkins, Indiana, the city tormented by the Demogorgons, Mind Flyer, and the latest villain in us. Stranger Things 4: Volume 1 Vecna reveals that it’s Henry Creel (Jimmy Campbell Power), aka “The One,” the first to test Dr. Brenner (Matthew Modine) in Hawkins’ lab as Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) first opens a portal to the Upside Down. As explained in “The Curse of the Vecna” by Dustin (Gatien Matarazzo), “There is another world. A world hidden under Hawkins.”
This world below has mostly remained a mystery, but the answers have emerged Volume 1 From Weird things Season 4, the penultimate season of the Netflix series.
A flashback to 1979 reveals that one organized Hawkins Lab (also known as 001) used his telekinetic powers to slaughter superhuman “Papa” Brenner’s test subjects, leaving only eleven alive. “We can remake the world, remake it as we see fit,” one told the eight-year-old Eleven newspaper. But she resisted and turned down One’s offer, and he catapulted him to The Upside Down to become Vecna - the evil that haunts Hawkins’ traumatized teens in Season 4.
