Strange New Worlds star Christina Chung reveals her role in the Star Wars pieces

Christina Chung made an impression on Star Trek fans by playing security officer Lan Nonyan Singh, a descendant of Khan Nonin Singh, in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. But before joining the Star Trek universe, Chong had a role in Star Wars that ended up on the cutting room floor. Lucasfilm cast Chong in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Like everything else regarding this pre-production movie, the studio kept Chung’s role a secret. Since her scene never made it to the final trailer for the movie, fans never learned what her role was supposed to be. ComicBook.com had a chance to talk to Chung Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. While discussing these massive sci-fi franchises, Chong (also played by Lorna Bucket in Doctor from), we asked about this mysterious role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

“I was on set on the first day of shooting in Abu Dhabi in the middle of the desert,” Chung says. “I remember I was wearing the all-purple hoodie and all that special makeup, so I was kind of sweating for something. They were like, ‘Look, it’s only a small role, but it’s going to be shot in Abu Dhabi and it’s going to be cool.'”

She shared a scene with Daisy Ridley as Rey when she was still an orphaned scavenger in Jaco. Chung’s character had a child, and her presence emphasized Ray’s sense of abandonment.

“My scene was with Daisy Ridley, and it was, at first, the first day of filming,” Chung recalls. “They had to drive us. I remember I just saw the point in the middle of the desert, and that was where the group was and then it arrived and it was so huge. JJ Abrams, there were three units in this part of the desert and he drove to each unit via a chariot. Golf, set it up and then move on to the next, I think maybe he should have watched it on the cart, I don’t know. But the size of that, it was my first time with such a huge group like that. The scene included explosions and crying, and I had a son. I can’t To remember exactly what the scene was about, but basically, Ray’s on her own, and I’m leaving with my son this ship and she’s all alone in the desert.”

Although she did not appear in the final version of the film, Chung says the experience working in Star Wars was still worthwhile. “I saw all the Stormtroopers and they were practicing their moves and their stuff. It was unbelievable,” she says. “That was a great experience in Abu Dhabi. So random. And then we actually had to reshoot because, I don’t remember, something went wrong and they had to reshoot, but they reshoot in Pinewood in London with a green screen. So I got paid twice to do it. With this job and I ended up on the cutting room floor, which is amazing.”
