Top Gun Maverick was released in cinemas and slowly but surely became one of the most successful films of the year. At the time of writing, Tom Cruise’s latest high-octane adventure has grossed nearly $300 million at the box office.
And while the film brought back some notable people in Maverick’s life, the film may have given the pilot a vision of his idyllic life as he died in the air.
A new theory has surfaced online that points to the opening moments of Top Gun Maverick.
Viewers were reunited with Maverick as they were told that his project, Darkstar, was about to stop being funded.
The idea for the program was to send a plane cruising at Mach 10 — something that had never happened before.
But after learning it’s about to close, Maverick decides to take matters into his own hands. He made one last death-defying attempt when he hit Mach 10.
And against all odds, he did.
In a glorious final show, Maverick’s plane over speeded — but it didn’t end well. The plane exploded into hundreds of pieces, leaving the fate of the defector a mystery.
But after a long time, viewers saw him stumble into a nearby restaurant, and order a glass of water, covered in dust but otherwise perfectly safe.
This is of course completely unrealistic. But what followed was a perfect ride for the iconic Cruise.
Shortly after the accident, he is recruited by his former opponent, the Snowman, to train a new group of recruits – a job only he can do.

In the original 1986 film Top Gun, Maverick loses his best friend, Goose, in a tragic aviation accident. The film also showed that he had a young son, Bradley, who grew up to be Rooster Miles Teller in Top Gun Maverick.
The defector clearly feels a great deal of guilt and loathing about the event that killed his best friend. The new film provided Maverick with the opportunity to settle these issues with both himself and Rooster, decades after his father’s death.
So, with Top Gun Maverick serving as Cruise’s character’s final walk, it makes sense that he’d make peace with all the important people in his life. (via eagle)
But this is also a metaphor used in cinema. When a character dies, they often go through a definitive vision of their life, or how they would have liked to end their life. In Maverick’s case, the hatred between him and Gus could be quelled, falling in love forever, and closing the book on his rivalry with the Snowman – all while being the greatest pilot on the planet at the same time.
Could this mean that the Maverick was actually some kind of a recent death dream?
