Joe Jackson was born on July 26, 1928 in Fountain Hill, Arkansas to Crystal Lee and Samuel Joseph Jackson, who were both teachers. Jackson, the eldest of five children, had a turbulent childhood, with his father reportedly being very strict and domineering. Jackson is said to have had a reclusive childhood and had only a few friends. His parents separated when Jackson was twelve and his brothers moved with their mother to East Chicago, Indiana. However, Joe moved with his father to Oakland, California. His father remarried when Joe was eighteen, at which point Joe joined the rest of his family in East Chicago. He did not complete high school.
Family and early career
He took a job at the Inland Steel Company in East Chicago. It was here that Joe pursued his dream of becoming a boxer. Joe Jackson had success with the Golden Gloves and was preparing for a professional sports career when he met 17-year-old Katherine Skross who was a nearby student at Washington High School. He was already married at that time, but soon the marriage was annulled in order to be with Catherine. Jackson married Catherine Skross in November 1949 and the couple purchased their first home, a two-bedroom storied home in Gary, Indiana. They went on to have ten children, the first of whom was Maureen Ribe Jackson. Joe got a second job at American Foundries in Chicago and Catherine started working at Sears in Gary, Indiana. Around this time, Jackson was playing guitar in a band with his brother Luther called The Falcons.

In 1963, Jackson became fully aware of their children’s musical talent and quickly turned himself into the acting director of the family group that would soon become known as The Jackson 5. He started working first with the three eldest sons in the family: Tito, Jermaine and Jackie. They eventually recruited Michael and Marlon, and the band originally performed under the name The Jackson Brothers. They started playing local talent shows and at high school jobs locally, but eventually Joe started booking her at more serious venues including the Apollo Theater in New York City. The Jackson 5 secured its first record contract in November 1967 with Gordon Keith, president of Gary’s Stilltown Records.
The Jackson 5 released their first single in 1968, “Big Boy”, which unfortunately did not have a real hit. However, the following year, the group won an amateur night competition and secured their record-breaking contract win in Motown in March 1969. The family then moved to Los Angeles, where Joe would sit in on every recording session performed by the Jackson 5 for the Motown label. . The band gained widespread fame by releasing their first single from Motown, “I Want You Back”. The song quickly reached #1 after which the group released their first three albums. Other songs that reached number one included “ABC”, “The Love You Save” and “I’ll Be There” all in 1970. In 1974, Joe founded his own music record company, Ivory Tower International Records, and the artists signed under His management toured the world with The Jackson 5 as opening act.

The Jackson 5 left Motown Records in 1975 to sign with Epic Records. However, a few sons started going their separate ways, with Michael and Jermaine signing deals to release solo albums. In the mid-1970s, the group was forced to rename itself The Jacksons as they discovered that Motown president Berry Gordy had the rights to publish the band’s original name.
Joe put his daughter Janet Jackson’s career on the map in 1982 when he involved her in films and as a recording studio, and financed the recording of her first demo. She later signed with A&M Records.

While the group was a huge success, tensions eventually led to their firing Joe Jackson from their manager position. Michael later accused Joseph Jackson of the abuse, which was confirmed by some of the siblings and denied by others. Joseph Jackson imposed long and intense training on his sons and booked them in more and more respectable places until they came to a place at the famous Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. When another woman gave birth to a child by Joe Jackson, wife Katherine publicly denounced him and filed for divorce twice, but eventually dropped both cases.
In 1993, son Michael Jackson spoke out against Joe Jackson on The Oprah Winfrey Show, detailing the physical and mental abuse he suffered at the hands of his father as a child. The case was split between the Jackson siblings. On June 25, 2009, Michael Jackson died suddenly. Michael’s last will listed his mother as guardian of his three children. His father, Joseph, received nothing from Michael’s property.
Joe Jackson passed away on June 27, 2018 at the age of 89 after suffering from pancreatic cancer.
