Scott Mendelsohn Forbes He finds a balance between obvious marketing opportunities and adventurism, saying this movie is worth watching for fans who have been eyeing it, but isn’t victorious enough to get what hasn’t been turned off the fence:
In its best moments, including some real emotional gloom in the first and third acts, Lightyear plays as a movie that took its commercial motives not as a pretext or a prop but as an artistic challenge, unlike Creed II or The LEGO Movie. This is not good. It remains a highly commercially motivated piece of art with aspirations of a multi-platform media franchise. However, no one contacted her.

The fun is a big part of the point, however, and Lightyear delivers without wasting any time. This is a fun movie that looks great. Pixar wanted to offer something like a wild space opera, and it did. She enjoyed this exciting character development as much as the world she chose to open up to. I don’t know what Andy is doing these days (maybe it’s a boring thing, since Sid from Neighborhood was more creative), but I can see how a smaller version of him would have been swept up in this space trip.

As ratings now seem mandatory, this is a powerful mid-level Pixar car with plenty of kid-friendly appeal and an important nostalgia factor for fans of ’80s and ’90s sci-fi. The studio’s space-age masterpiece, Wall-E, can’t touch or animate Brad Bird’s indescribable Iron Giant. But the beauty of outer space environments and the expressive allure of the characters should make this play as good as the first Pixar release to hit theaters since the pandemic began. This includes IMAX screens, with parts of the film specifically filmed in the larger format.
Critics seem a little conflicted about how they got Pixar’s first post-COVID foray into theaters, but fans of Toy Story The franchise is not likely to let anything stop them.
