How Callisto Protocol offers a new look at combative combat in survival horror

Melee combat action is always an option in a survival horror game, but it is rarely the best. It’s usually a last-ditch, and it’s a way for players to put distance between themselves and any villain trying to chew their face so they can catch their breath and aim their next shot. Said Babotsis, one of the developers who also produced the first and second Dead Space games and other sub-games. “So we really wanted to create something where you mix and match combat range with melee combat and create very intense scenarios where melee is effective and brutal and then range is a strategic choice when you’re trying to keep enemies out of you. “We intentionally want the game to be challenging so you never have that feeling of, ‘Oh, I can just push the button to send the enemies out,'” Babotsis said. “That’s not what we do at all. One of the things that was interesting about allowing melee combat is creating more intense close contact with the enemies, so you can see them better. We put a lot of attention to detail in the enemies and it just intensifies the life struggle. Or die, I guess, during the game, so when they beat you up and you turn into a fight, yes, you can be effective, but they’re pretty brutal.

Papoutsis went on to say that it’s more about the options players have so they can choose how to navigate the situation while still making sure that the approaching Biophage isn’t an instant death sentence.

“What we’re trying to make is player selection, so the players can manage the fight the way they want to,” he said. “And I also don’t feel at the end of, ‘Oh, well, I’m done. “We want to give you a chance. It doesn’t mean you’ll always survive, but we want to give you the chance, if you’re skilled in our systems, you might be able to go out and survive a battle where they beat you.”

Well, I guess that stuff just isn’t kind of weird in a way like the bonus when you fail. You fail. I know in other games, when that happens, it’s like, OK, I failed, but oh, look at this. It’s fun and scary and I think in a shocking way, it’s fun. So, I guess, yeah, stay tuned for that too.”
