If the thought of losing your WhatsApp history is the only thing stopping you from jumping from your Android device to one of the best iPhones, consider eliminating that hurdle. WhatsApp brings out the ability to transfer your WhatsApp data from Android to iPhone, so switching phones doesn’t mean starting everything over in the Facebook-owned chat app.
The launch begins today (June 14) at 9AM EDT / 6AM PT, and it will be available to all WhatsApp users in about a week. However, the WhatsApp migration will be integrated into a file Go to the iOS app (Opens in a new tab) Apple offers in the Google Play Store to help make the transition to its phones easier.
Moving to iOS already allows Android users to transfer contacts, messages, photos, videos, email accounts, and calendars to their new iOS devices. The latest version of Move to iOS adds WhatsApp support, with the feature appearing alongside other data you can transfer.
In addition to the latest versions of WhatsApp and Move to iOS, you will also need to move from an Android phone running Android 5 or later to an iOS device that has been updated to iOS 15.5, the current version of the Apple iPhone software.
WhatsApp started adding the ability to transfer chat logs from iPhones to Android devices last year, and WhatsApp betas from earlier this year hinted at the existence of a vice-versa feature.
In a statement on His Facebook page (Opens in a new tab)Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Meta, said, “We are adding to WhatsApp the ability to securely switch between phones and transfer chat history, photos, videos, and voice messages between Android and iPhone while maintaining end-to-end encryption.
“This is the most requested feature. We launched the ability [to] Switch from iPhone -> Android last year, and [are] Now adding Android -> iPhone too. “
WhatsApp has created two FAQ pages for this feature, so you can learn how Migrate data from Android to iPhone (Opens in a new tab) and how Migrate chat history from Android to iPhone (Opens in a new tab).
The move comes a few months before the possible arrival of the iPhone 14, Apple’s new flagship phones set to debut later this year. Since last week’s iOS 16 preview hints at the always-on display feature on iPhone 14 Pro models, we could see Apple play a role in reaching out to Android converts when its new phones arrive, reportedly in the fall. WhatsApp migration support seems like another piece of this puzzle.
