We’re expecting an iPad Pro 2022, even if Apple’s Peek Performance hits it back in March and goes with only the new iPad Air 5 debuting.
However, Apple has revised its premium tablet every year since its introduction (with the exception of 2019). With last year’s iPad Pro being one of the biggest updates ever, we’re excited to see what Apple has in store for 2022. Rumors are few and far between right now. However, with a launch date likely coming up soon, we hope to hear more about the new iPad Pro in the near future.
Here’s everything we know about the iPad Pro 2022 so far, plus a wish list if Apple is in the mood to listen.
Latest iPad Pro 2022 rumors (Updated June 9)
iPad Pro 2022 design
Once again, the 2022 iPad Pro range is expected to come in 11-inch and 12.9-inch sizes. But it looks like design changes are afoot for the 2022 iPad Pro, and we’ve heard about a couple so far.
Like the rumored Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra and, in fact, the 2021 MacBook Pro, Apple could add a notch to the iPad Pro’s design. However, the latest report from 9to5Mac (Opens in a new tab) He says that while Apple is considering the move, the decision is not firm.
The notch makes more sense here than in the company’s high-end laptops, as the iPad Pro uses FaceID for authentication, making for a large camera footprint. Despite this, it will likely prove unpopular even if adding the notch results in thinner edges.
The second design tweak we’ve heard about recently, via Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, is a glass back for a potential wireless charging entry. While this has always been a feature of Apple’s non-SE iPhones, there is talk that this will go a step further with reverse wireless charging, meaning it will be able to charge the battery of other devices such as iPhone, Apple Watch, or AirPods . This seems like another step towards the rumored long-term goal of devices to charge each other over the air (although that’s a long way off).
Apple is rumored to be working on a massive 15-inch iPad to accommodate larger smart displays, and its display components partner BOE has adapted its factory to make 15-inch OLEDs, but this larger panel is said to be at least a couple years away. But in the meantime, the 2022 iPad model may get a 14-inch version, says a leaker. In addition to the additional screen space, this model can come with more storage and RAM by default, which allows for better overall performance as well.
iPad Pro 2022 specifications
Early advice from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo as well as advice from a regular leaker pointed to the smaller 11-inch iPad Pro tablet that uses small LED display technology this time around. The feature isn’t entirely new, as it first appeared in 2021, but it was exclusive to 12.9-inch models, which cost significantly more. We hope this will allow more buyers to enjoy the deeper blacks and higher brightness provided by the independently lit pixels.
However, Kuo has recently retracted that claim, and now display analyst Ross Young says the 11-inch iPad Pro with a tiny LED light is unlikely. Apparently, the 12.9-inch model performs well enough to where Apple will likely want to keep this feature exclusive to its most expensive tablet.
separate report from 9to5Mac (Opens in a new tab) He says the iPad Pro can be powered by Apple’s upcoming M2 chip. The Apple M2 chip was announced at WWDC 2022 and featured in both the MacBook Air 2022 and the entry-level MacBook Pro 2022. However, we may also see an M2 Pro version of the iPad Pro as claims by analyst Jeff Pu about Apple’s new 3nm scale chip being used in the iPad later this year.
As for the cameras, the same 9to5Mac report notes that the iPad Pro 2022 could feature a camera setup similar to the iPhone 13, giving it great image quality along with features like cinematic mode for video. We’ve also heard that the upcoming iPad Pro may come with wireless charging support, which would be a welcome upgrade.
iPad Pro 2022 possible release date and price
Right now, the iPad Pro 2022 has been chosen for the fall release, according to reliable journalist and Bloomberg journalist Mark Gorman. This would make sense as previous iPad Pro models were revealed and released during the fall months.
For the price of the iPad Pro 2022, you can expect another premium product — and we imagine the 11-inch model would get at least the same $100 price hike as last year’s 12.9-inch model, if it were a rumored small LED display that was introduced.
That would make the tablet start at $899 for the 11-inch model and $1,099 for the 12.9-inch version. That, of course, is just an entry-level price tag, with the cost currently rising to $2,199 if you want a 12.9-inch 2TB model with 5G connectivity.
can’t wait? Then the iPad Pro 2020 also saves you a well-revamped tech purchase, and it’ll save you quite a bit of money.
iPad Pro 2022: What we want to see
To be completely honest, the iPad Pro is a really excellent product and we’re hard pressed to name any serious weaknesses that need urgent improvement. However, we do have a modest wish list.
To be clear, the 2021 iPad Pro has quite a decent battery life, but it’s notable that the 12.9-inch model “only” managed 10 hours and 48 minutes in our web browsing test, while the 11-inch version did 13:42. If this is a sign that the small LED display is more energy hungry than the IPS panel and both are already adopting the former this time around, then hopefully there will be larger cells to compensate.
The iPad Pro currently comes in two colors: space gray and silver, so there aren’t many options out there. Recently, Apple experimented with a wide range of colors for the iPhone 13 and the 24-inch iMac, and it would be nice if consumers had the option of a more colorful iPad Pro, too.
Well, that’s gotten into highly unlikely territory at this point, but the iPad Pro is at its best when it’s accompanied by two first-party accessories: a tampered Apple Pencil and a Smart Keyboard to turn it into a replacement laptop. Given how much Apple earns selling these optional accessories separately, that’s unlikely to change anytime soon, but we can dream…
