I just watched Episode 5 of Obi-Wan Kenobi, and while that episode did a lot of good in pretty powerful ways, I left feeling like this Blink-182 GIF from the “First Date” video. I was practically screaming “WTF?” out loud to myself.
So, of course, expect this article to contain spoilers for Obi-Wan Kenobi Episode 5. I can’t dive into what I don’t like about this episode (which is also the biggest issue in the entire Disney Plus series) without going into detail about this episode.
Now, don’t get me wrong, this episode made a strong hype for the last episode. Knowing we’ll be back at Tatooine, all the chess pieces on the board are headed toward Luke. In addition, the moments with Leah were strong.
But if I’m totally honest, this Obi-Wan Kenobi ring fell pretty flat when it felt like one of its most sought-after returns was basically nothing (limburger) (most of the time). And that moment I’m talking about is Hayden Christensen back on screen as Anakin Skywalker.
We should expect more from the chosen one
Before I go any further, I’ll admit we have another episode to go on. As Yoda once said, “You must be patient, little Padawan.” And with all due respect to the legend, Yoda didn’t sit in the Obi-Wan Kenobi promotional hype with Christensen front and center. At the time of all the hype, he seemed—just as Obi-Wan said to Anakin—”the chosen one.”
But, no, the Obi-Wan Kenobi Show was more about Obi-Wan and Leia than Anakin and Obi-Wan.
As we devoured every dish of the proverbial Obi-Wan Kenobi meal, it became more and more clear that Anakin/Vader was less of a main dish and more of a side dish. And so, when Christensen’s face finally showed up, what did we get?
We got a paltry set of quick-fire flashback sights for Anakin as a Padawan, minus any sort of de-aging technique. So we got 41-year-old Christensen playing 20-year-old Anakin.
These aren’t just flashback scenes, retold in all-too-familiar territory. As Lord Vader & Co. They try to break into the lair from which the path is trying to escape, we return to one of the duels of Anakin and Obi-Wan.
We remember that Anakin is an inferior Jedi master in combat because he doesn’t think enough, and only allows his anger to direct it. He does not believe in mercy, and always believes that Obi-Wan has no way out. Anakin’s need for victory blinds him.
With this, I covered nearly All From the memories of Anakin that we got in this episode. Christensen may have been the man in Vader’s suit, which appeared more prominently, but when the voice we hear is James Earl Jones, Christensen’s presence is nonexistent.
Anakin’s moments consisted of less than two minutes of footage, and I felt – unless we get more Anakin in Episode VI – that the hype around Christensen’s return was a fake goods bill.
The only decent part of Christensen’s comeback
The best part of Hayden Christensen’s on-screen return is that he helped tell the story of one of the best new characters in the Obi-Wan Kenobi show: Reva Svander. In this episode, we learn (as you might have guessed) that she was one of the little ones attacked by Anakin and the Storm Troopers as part of Order 66.
And that dark and creepy shot of Anakin with his hood raised and the blue light glowing beneath him? That was great. This helped fill in Riva’s story and make her a more compelling character.
Outlook: Obi-Wan Kenobi Episode 6 Help Us, You Are Our Only Hope!
Below, you’ll see concept art for the series, which showed a moment (we may still get it next week) where Obi-Wan and Darth Vader had their final rematch. Judging from the walkway they’re standing on, this isn’t supposed to be where they fought in Episode 3.
Hopefully, this scene is more than just a fight, and offers some emotional facts about the broken relationship between a Jedi master and a former padawan.
I’ll admit, though, that Lord Vader’s shot in a Bacta tank earlier this season doesn’t give me much hope of Anakin wearing a mask for this scene. After their fight at the conclusion of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Anakin Skywalker was left bruised and out of shape to take a photo.
We’ll see, though. For now, I’m just baffled by how these crumbs might sound enough. a friend of mine’s name He said (Opens in a new tab) He told me that what we had was “still better than nothing”. I would probably agree with him if you were a big fan of pageants. But for now, I hope the final course for this meal is perfectly prepared.
