Former WWE referee Dave Hebner has passed away at the age of 73. Hebner’s nephew, Brian Hebner, shared the news on his podcast Reffin’ It Up, then shared a post on social media, writing “RIP Dave Hebner. Gone but never forgotten. Always loved.” Brian, who is Dave’s twin nephew Earl Hepner, has not revealed the cause of death at this time, although it appears he has been dealing with health issues for a while according to recent photos, particularly one from a visit with NASCAR. Dave Hebner started as a referee with WWE in the ’80s and will be part of some classic matches, including WrestleMania III’s Ricky Steamboat and WrestleMania V’s Hulk Hogan vs Randy Savage. He also had a role to play in the classic match between Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant, which saw Ted DiBiase lock him in a locker so Earl could switch places with him and win for Andre.

Over the years, Dave has participated in WWF Superstars, WWE F Challenge, Saturday Night’s Main Event, WWE Sunday Night Heat, WWE Raw and WWE SmackDown, with his last act for the company coming in 2005. Hebner was also part of a class-action lawsuit against WWE to The side of 50 other plaintiffs who allege that WWE hid the risks of neurological injuries and deliberately classed wrestlers as independent contractors to avoid liability under labor protection laws. In that complaint, he stated that Hebner had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
