If you missed Uncharted when it was in theaters, and didn’t want to pay to buy it or rent it on demand, you’re in luck: According to What’s on Netflix (Opens in a new tab)The Tom Holland-led video game hits US Netflix on July 15.
It looks like a lot of people have already seen Uncharted. The film grossed $148.4 million at the domestic box office, according to Box Office Mojo, and $401.5 million worldwide on an estimated budget of $120 million. The movie is also available through premium on-demand services Since the end of Aprilalthough no figures are available on how well it performs.
But this will mark Uncharted’s first live broadcast, and the first time people can watch it without paying extra for the franchise. So it’s bound to get its fair share of opinions, whether you’re a fan of the Uncharted franchise or not.
Uncharted has not been particularly popular with critics, and currently has a profile 40% score on Rotten Tomatoes (Opens in a new tab) Based on 246 reviews, which officially makes it a “rotten” movie. The synopsis on the site reads that Uncharted “is promisingly represented but misleadingly titled, Uncharted mines its best-selling material to produce a disappointing echo of the superior adventure films.”
However, the audience score paints a different picture, 90%. It is based on more than 5,000 verified reviews. On the audience side, Rotten Tomatoes describes the film this way: “With plenty of action and a great cast, Uncharted is a solid adaptation of the games — and a fun return to classic adventure films from the past.” IMDB gives the movie a Slightly less impressive 6.4/10 (Opens in a new tab).
Whether you enjoy the movie yourself is another matter entirely. If you’re a big fan of games, you might not be too excited about the changes Uncharted has brought about. This is the origin story of Nathan Drake, rather than an adventure featuring the expertise of a treasure hunter and out-of-the-game explorer, and was played by a talkative Tom Holland as a result.
Also, Sully, played by Mark Wahlberg and one-time front-runner Nathan Drake, lacks his signature mustache.
Those unfamiliar with the games may enjoy the movie, or they may not. It all depends on how much you like action movies, especially ones that aren’t on the same level as things like Raiders of the Lost Ark.
However, Uncharted is only 2 hours long and won’t make much of an impact in life. Plus it won’t cost you anything, assuming you already have a Netflix subscription, which is more than you can say to buy a ticket to watch in theaters.
Uncharted stars Tom Holland as Nathan Drake, Mark Wahlberg as Victor “Sully” Sullivan, Antonio Banderas as villain Santiago Moncada, and Sophia Ali as Chloe Fraser. It hits Netflix on July 15, but you can head over to Netflix’s Uncharted Page (Opens in a new tab) Now ask him to remind you as soon as the movie arrives.
