The iPad 2022 will likely be the next installment of Apple’s well-loved tablet. And given the rumors so far, we’re excited about this model a lot more than we’ve been in previous years.
Sources have claimed that the 2022 iPad could be the model that finally brings some much-needed improvements to Apple’s tablet, with a full-screen design and USB-C connector leading the rumor display. If these claims turn out to be true, we’ll be thrilled.
Read on for a summary of everything we’ve heard about the iPad 2022 so far. And check back soon as we will keep this page updated with the latest details.
iPad 2022 possible release date and price
We should look forward to the iPad 2022 appearing in the fall like the iPad 2021 that came out last year and like the previous core iPads in previous years. If that’s the case, we’ll likely see it among Apple’s usual fall product announcements that flaunt the iPhone 14, even though Apple has been known to launch several products in the fall.
Let’s hope that with the upgraded components, about which we will discuss rumors a little later, there will be no price increase. It makes the 2021 iPad’s starting price of $329 / £319 / AU$499 easily accessible for regular buyers, and Apple would be smart to keep it low.
iPad design 2022
The look of the iPad 2022 may be very different from previous versions, as Apple may give its tablet a long-awaited revamp.
One source said Apple could switch the Lightning port we’ve seen on previous iPads to USB-C, which is a more versatile port. If that happens, we likely won’t see super-fast Thunderbolt 4 compatibility like the iPad Pro but USB-C will make connecting accessories or displays a lot easier. It will also help Apple comply with a recently passed EU law that will make USB-C on mobile devices mandatory by the end of 2024.
Something the leakers can’t determine yet is whether or not there is still a Home button on the new iPad. No other iPad sold by Apple currently comes with a home button, so it wouldn’t surprise us if Apple wanted all of its iPads to look like a proper family again. If there is no Home button on the 2022 iPad, that likely means switching to the Touch ID power button instead, as we did on the latest iPad Air and iPad mini models.
iPad screen 2022
Along with the redesigns mentioned above, the iPad 2022 display could increase, from the current 10.2-inch model to the possible 10.5-inch model. This means that the best iPad cases currently available will not fit the new tablet.
If the iPad screen gets larger, it probably doesn’t mean upgrades to other display features such as increased brightness, a wider color gamut from the Pro Series, a small LED panel like the iPad Air (2022), or the iPad Pro display. Apple will want to save a few things for its more expensive models, after all.
iPad 2022 specifications
Sources that talk about the iPad 2022 currently claim that it will run on the A14 Bionic chip from the iPhone 12. This means that there will be a performance gap between this and the iPad mini that uses the A15 chip like the iPhone 13 series. The gap will be larger when comparing the A14 iPad to the iPad Air and iPad Pro, both of which use the Apple M1 chipset with added performance and additional capabilities.
The A14 chipset will apparently still mean a 30% increase over the 2021 iPad, which will help power modern apps. Additionally, the A14 chip is compatible with 5G, allowing the cell-connected iPad model to reach faster data speeds than the current LTE model.
If it launches this fall, we’ll see that iPad 2022 uses iPadOS 16, the newly announced software for iPads that is currently in beta. Not all features may be available in iPadOS 16, as some, such as Stage Manager, are exclusive to the M1 chip in iPad Air and iPad Pro.
iPad 2022
The 2021 iPad is still a good tablet but it really needs some updates to make it a decent competitor to the cheaper Android tablets. The rumored upgrades of a better chipset, larger screen, and updated port are exactly what Apple needs to make a tablet that appeals to the most discerning buyers.
We remain concerned about the potential price hike. With so many cheaper Apple products getting more expensive, it would be nice to see the 2022 iPad buck the trend. We look forward to learning more about the new iPad essential as fall approaches.
