You’ve been warned about full spoilers for Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy! Readers of the comedy series The Umbrella Academy were probably surprised to watch the final season and frequently watched “Hotel Obsidian” throughout the new episodes. Although the name certainly sounds like Hotel Oblivion from the source material, and Hotel Oblivion does appear, and while there are some similarities, there are also some glaring differences. The new season isn’t complete but it’s revealed how different this version of Hotel Oblivion that appears in the TV series is from its counterpart in the comics.

According to Hargreeves tradition, it was a frustration, something to cover up his true intentions. On the other side of the gate, the Oblivion was a machine sitting in another dimension. As Hargreaves himself eventually revealed, it was created by “whoever created the universe,” and was done as an emergency glass-breaking scenario, a scenario that would allow the universe to be reset if necessary.
Season 3 features the devastating effects of the kugelblitz, the reality-eating black hole as a result of the grandfather paradox in this new universe. Later after entering the hotel and defeating the “Guardians”, a giant samurai who appears to be made of cockroaches, the Hargreeves use the machine in the hotel to try to reset the universe. hte machine running? Parachute Academy, and the remains of sparrows, where Hargreaves noted that “the particles within their bodies are the only things that fuel the machine,” and the particles he is referring to are apparently generated by it and endowed with its power.
In the pages of the sitcom The Umbrella Academy, Hotel Oblivion is very different. For the comics, the building is by Sir Reginald Hargreaves but it’s not a place with samurai-like grandmasters or even a universe-resetting machine, At least what we know. Gerard Way & Gabriel Bá Hotel’s comic series uses Oblivion as a prison, housing all the enemies The Umbrella Academy has faced over the years, at least apparently a prison.
In the third installment of the sitcom, the villains that appear at the Oblivion Hotel, starting with characters like Dr. outside their borders. It coincides with a number of other characters and plot threads that culminate in emptying the hotel and uniting the umbrellas. There is also a major hotel development that is not fully explored in the pages of the sitcom. At a certain point, it became clear that the hotel was not just a prison for villains, but a lure and tarp, intended to entrap an invisible beast from the depths of the universe.
There’s no mention of this plan for Hotel Oblivion or this gigantic galactic monster anywhere in the new season of The Umbrella Academy TV series, but that doesn’t quite mean it never will. Gerard Way & Gabriel Bá’s confirmed upon its first season appearance that they provided an outline for series creator Steve Blackman and the writers on the direction of the comics, meaning the show knows where to sow the seeds for the future and where they can reveal.
The TV series may be returning to Hotel Oblivion, that’s not clear, but the new season of the series reveals a whole new world, a world where umbrellas have no powers, and Sir Reginald Hargreaves has reshaped the world in his own image. Something that also appears to be a deviation from the source material.
