The Apple Watch 8 is expected to come with an exclusive Low Power Mode that could make the next Apple smartwatch worth the wait.
This comes from Bloomberg reporter and regular Apple educator Mark Gorman (Opens in a new tab)who claims: “I also expect the Low Power Mode I’ve been discussing for a long time as part of watchOS 9 will appear as a new hardware-exclusive feature.”
Battery life is one of the biggest hurdles for the best smartwatches to overcome. The current Apple Watch 7 offers only 18 hours of battery life, which may seem like a lot but won’t help you use more than a day; Skip the fitness-tracking features and you’ll get two days of use value, which is still little for a wearable device. I’ve found that the same is broadly true for the Apple Watch SE I’ve been using.
But the Apple Watch 8’s low-power mode, or a batch of new Apple Watches — where Gurman has a new upside-down SE model as well as the rugged Apple Watch — could be the antidote to smartwatch battery anxiety.
How this will be achieved is not clear. Gurman has an Apple Watch 8 and Apple Watch SE that tend to use the S8 chip, which will have the same specifications as the current S7 chip. However, knowing that Apple, we will be confident that some improvements will be made on the hardware and software side to improve energy efficiency and therefore battery life. Apparently, we’ll have to wait until next year to get the “all-new” Apple Watch processor.
Gurman also noted that the current Apple Watch SE will slip to the same price point as the Apple Watch 3, with the next SE model taking the place as the entry-level Apple Watch option. There was no mention of a new design or additional features, but we can expect the new Apple Watch SE to be more powerful and capable than the current model.
For the powerful Apple Watch 8, it is expected to benefit from enhanced exercise tracking features watchOS 9 Brings. The ability to be able to cycle between tracking swimming, cycling and running Gurman’s claims is particularly relevant to the extreme sports watch. We can see the powerful Apple Watch 8 as attractive to multi-sport athletes, such as those who enjoy triathlons.
With the Apple Watch 8 likely to launch at the same time as the iPhone 14 range, which we expect to arrive on September 13th, we’re suggesting it’s worth waiting to see what’s available on next-generation Apple Watch models before getting a new Apple Watch.
