Moon Knight VFX is a master craftsman from the ground up

Gods are nothing new in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The franchise has been involved in legends since its arrival ox In 2011, before switching to the Pantheon and diving into the world of Egyptian mythology in 2022 moon knight. While Khuncho, the Egyptian moon god, featured prominently throughout the series, the series also featured Tawart and Amit.

Martin Hill and his crew at Wētā FX, New Zealand were behind the development of the Ammit model used in the series, and we recently sat down with our Visual Effects Supervisor to chat about character creation. On the set, Sophia Dano played Amit, who served as a motion reference for the character modeling team Wētā afterwards.

“I think the main issues with Amit weren’t just that we couldn’t find a talking crocodile,” Hill jokes. “But crocodiles have a very solid head structure. They have a single jaw axis which is basically a clapperboard, and they don’t have lips, which makes talking a little different. They also have their tongue stuck right at the bottom of their mouths, which is something I discovered during this production.”

It was a challenge, Hill says, because the filmmakers behind the series wanted to keep the character grounded and sinister while avoiding the risk of turning a god into a caricature.

“We were very aware that we needed to make her look sinister and we had to be able to properly express the feelings, but we also knew in the dialogue even early on that she had some rather sympathetic sentences, she had to appeal to Oscar through one of the scenes.” Hill adds.

To combat this, the team took some liberties when building the character’s mouth, including building fake muscles and the location of the character’s teeth compared to alligators found in the wild.

“It was a case of making everything precise enough that it was convincing,” continues the artist. “Fortunately, all the elements of the fight are working, the crocodiles look pretty mean so the fight expression was very easy, but it was hard to capture a little more sympathetic feelings, and a little begging. One of the things we did was flipped from the artwork her eyes turned to something more human You click on it right away in a place where you feel like you’re seeing a soul window of some kind, you can see her emotions underneath.”

In case you were curious – yes, each tooth has been meticulously engineered from the ground up. Not only that, but the model also included handmade sockets for the teeth for you to sit in.

“Because she’s such a unique character and we’ve been doing great sculpting, Crystal, our lead stylist, and Nick, who was the model before her, really did a lot of very subtle sculpting changes to find what she really looked like,” Hill concludes. “So, we just wanted full technical prowess rather than any kind of procedural approach for that.”
