We only have two weeks left of the full reveal on July 12th, but nothing has been confirmed on one of the phone’s key specs (1). We know the chipset now, the Snapdragon is a dedicated mid-range. Other specifications have also been leaked.
Talking to Enter (Opens in a new tab)Phone (1) founder Karl Bee has not confirmed that Phone (1) will use the Snapdragon 778G+, which is an improved version of the 778G from 2021. This means that Phone (1) is a mid-ranger, not the flagship that some previously thought. This actually makes a lot of sense, because a full flagship costs so much more for a small business like nothing.
The Snapdragon 778G+ is a custom build that Qualcomm has done for Nothing, which is surprising alone. We suspect that Pei’s reputation helped not secure this deal, as nothing has yet been proven in the smartphone world. But what makes this extra version so special? According to Input, it’s all about wireless charging and wireless reverse.
So why go mid-range? Pei told Input it’s about making Phone (1) energy efficient while getting the right performance – Pei believes flagship chips have diminishing returns. This balance holds itself out with cost. In short, the Snapdragon 778G+ doesn’t help keep costs, and therefore price, low.
Nothing is claiming that the Snapdragon 778G+ is more thermally efficient than other chips like the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 and Snapdragon 7 Gen 1. It is in keeping with Pei’s belief that the specs are hitting the point of meaninglessness, a point he tried to prove with the OnePlus Nord series while still working there.
Other specs for Nothing Phone (1) were leaked just before this confirmation. We’ve heard that the phone (1) could have a 6.55-inch 120Hz display, 8GB of RAM, a 4,500mAh battery, and 45W charging. The rear cameras are supposed to be 50 MP and 16 MP, with the latter possibly being very wide – the front camera should be 16 MP.
Nothing will be revealed about Phone (1) in full on July 12th, so stay tuned for that.
