The awesome Kong hit the All Elite Wrestling scene in style. The accomplished professional wrestler arrived in AEW at the company’s opening ceremony, AEW double or nothing (2019), as a surprise contestant in a four-way match between her, Brett Baker, Nyla Rose, and Kylie Ray. Kong was introduced to AEW audiences by Brandi Rhodes, and she will continue to appear with the company’s former head of brand for the rest of her time with the show. Known as The Nightmare Collective, Kong, Brandi Mill and Dr. Luther added to their ranks before the stable was quietly abandoned in February 2020.
Kong was going to stop AEW to film the Netflix series radiate Around the same time that her stable was brought down, and that would have ended up at the end of her tenure in AEW. His previous TNA Knockouts Champion contract expired in June 2021, and he will retire from professional wrestling completely that summer.
While the name Awesome Kong speaks for itself, the former NWA Women’s Champion said that she felt “unheard” during her time with AEW.
“I felt inaudible. I wasn’t in control. All I could do was say, ‘I have idea XYZ.'” “I couldn’t get into the room where the final decisions were made,” Kong said. Chris Van Fleet. “Believe me, Kia [referring to her real name Kia Stevens] I chased that room. I’d stay there after the big meetings and pick up water bottles and cups like, “Huh, you need…you want me to go? Well (laughs). I tried to get into the last meeting where decisions were made. He didn’t get a chance.”
Kong noted that AEW’s small circle of decision-makers was clear from the jump.
“That’s not going to happen, so I’m not going to push it.” when you see this [makes a box with her hands] It is those who are comfortable making decisions, this is not reading or criticism, it is only those who are comfortable making decisions, Kong continued. What are you doing? It is out of my control. If I had control, give me 15 minutes of Kia. 15 minutes of Kia fame. Go there and steal the show from them boys. you you you. Nella (Rose), go steal the show from the boys.”
Regardless of how it went in AEW, Kong confirmed that she knew the promotion was in its infancy when she was there.
“I don’t want to sound like I’m attacking the crew there in AEW, especially since we’ve been up and running. We’re all new CEOs and trying to think outside the box and really give it to everyone,” Kong said. “Something new, something not seen. We have seen it all. We were trying to give you something you haven’t seen.”
Kong capped her wrestling career by being inducted into the Influential Wrestling Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2021.
