Not only is Netflix and Paramount Plus canceled right now, Prime Video just removed one of its major 2022 TV shows, and it only lasted one season.
Limit (Opens in a new tab) Reports indicate that Prime Video has passed the second season of Night Sky. The news that the ambitious sci-fi show has been canceled comes less than two months after the entire first eight-episode season of the show ended on Amazon’s streaming service. High production costs and a lack of “significant impact on viewership” are cited as the main reasons for the early termination of the show.
Regardless of its short-lived age, Night Sky has left its mark on television history. The first episode of the show was broadcast to outer space and set a record for the furthest distance from Earth a television series was distributed. Let’s just hope there aren’t any Martians who are too hopeful for Season 2.
What is the theme of Night Sky?
Written by Holden Miller and Daniel C. Connolly, Night Sky is a science fiction drama centered around a seemingly normal husband and wife living in Illinois. Erin (Sissy Spacek) is a retired English teacher, and Franklin (JK Simmons) is a former woodworker, on the surface, there’s nothing out of the ordinary about the couple, who have been married for 50 years.
However, the couple hides a secret: Years ago they discovered a portal in their backyard that leads to a strange (apparently) deserted planet. Erin and Franklin have kept this secret ever since, but when a mysterious young man (Chai Hansen) comes through the portal and into their lives they discover that not everything is as it seems. The retirees are soon drawn into an intergalactic adventure revolving around a mysterious cult.
Besides Spacek, Simmons, and Hansen, Night Sky also starred Adam Bartley, Julieta Zylberberg, Rocío Hernández, Piotr Adamczyk, and Kiah McKirnan.
What did critics say about Night Sky?
Critics were mostly complimenting about Night Sky, with Simmons and Spacek’s performances garnering a lot of praise in particular. The high-concept show attracted 73%, albeit not amazing rotten tomatoes (Opens in a new tab)Its audience score was slightly higher, with an even more impressive 81%.
Brain Tallerico from Playlist (Opens in a new tab) Praise for the show’s leaders: “Every time Night Sky threatens to drift into something disposable, Simmons and Spacek shine, reminding everyone that they are real stars.”
The Hollywood Reporter (Opens in a new tab)Dan Feinberg was equally impressed by Simmons and Spacek’s declaration that “Oscar winners are nothing short of attractive.” Although Fienberg wasn’t entirely enthusiastic about the show surrounding the cast suggesting that the writing wasn’t able to keep up with the potential clients’ performance.
A more negative review came from Lucy Mangan of Watchman (Opens in a new tab) who described the show as “an exercise in frustration more than anything else.” Some critics have also questioned whether Night Sky would do better as a two-hour movie rather than an eight-episode long TV show.
Analysis: Prime Video does Netflix
Netflix takes a lot of heat to cancel TV shows after just one season, but it’s not the only streaming device that will cut its losses if the show’s underperforming right out of the gate.
Prime Video’s decision to cancel Night Sky, which was heavily promoted ahead of launch, is further evidence that streaming wars can be brutal. This sci-fi show can now be added to a very long list of streaming programs that never achieved its potential, and expect it to appear on “very soon canceled TV shows” lists in the future.
This cancellation really hurts because Night Sky had a hook premise and performs perfectly. While the first season was a little tricky around the edges, he seemed poised to find a foothold in his second season. Unfortunately, we’ll never know if Prime Video could have taken another Expanse-sized blow to its hands with the streaming device given the show’s creative team only had a bit of a time.
Of course, sci-fi content creation is very expensive, in large part due to the costly special effects, so it stands to reason that Night Sky’s failure to attract significant viewers during the release window was a fatal blow. However, for viewers who have watched and enjoyed this sci-fi drama, Night Sky will remain another What If?
