as such Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Show co-host Henry Alonso Myers explained to ComicBook that Paul Wesley wasn’t the Kirk option that many had in mind – but Star Trek’s selection directors knew better:

We auditioned for a bunch of people. We talked to a bunch of people. Look, we saw some really interesting talented actors, but when it came to embodying the spirit and ideas of James T. Kirk, he was the one we all saw and were like, ‘Oh yeah,'” he explains Myers.” And I have to give credit to Margaery Simkin and Orly Sitowitz, who are casting directors, because they were like, ‘We think Paul Wesley.’ And we were like, ‘Really? Impressive.’

Talk to Paul Wesley THR About taking on the role of Kirk. As the actor points out, he got past a lot of the pressures of the performance by first introducing him as an alternate universe version of Kirk, shaped by a very different history in a reality in which Captain Pike never abandoned the establishment:

“Obviously, the Season 1 finale is an alternate timeline that doesn’t exist, because it takes place in the future. He’s not the leader of the Enterprise. He’s never met Spock, and he’s never had all of these experiences. It’s Kirk who has been shaped differently,” Wesley excel. “So at the end of the season, it was really open to interpretation.”

I know this outfit. I feel at home in it.”

Finally, Wesley teases the upcoming debut of Captain Kirk who will go on to fulfill the fate we know he will have – when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 returns.
