We at Tom’s Guide love HBO Max (okay, I’ve kept the best streaming service even after missing out on the day and date movies), but personally I spent the first two years of the service somewhat annoyed as I waited until the final release of this show. Ironically, this show didn’t originally air on HBO Max!
So, you’re forgiven for not identifying Harley Quinn with HBO Max, as one of DC’s best shows or movies of recent history hasn’t even appeared on the service he’s in now. Originally, Harley Quinn has aired on the retired DC Universe streaming service ever since, gaining more acclaim than fame.
Fortunately, the show’s new home on HBO Max seems to have allowed it to gain a stronger following, as I know many people who care more about Harley Quinn season 3 than any other show this summer. So you can take Lord of the Ring: Rings of Strength and throw it to Andor, for all I care.
I offer this recommendation Because Harley Quinn is almost back, which now makes it the perfect time to stop by and learn about HBO Max (starts at $9.99 a month) (Opens in a new tab)) turns out. Now, let’s dive into why Harley Quinn is so good.
What is the theme of Harley Quinn?
First, while I’m going to avoid all spoilers, I have to put a file Adult content Warning in advance. Harley Quinn is a cartoon show, but also an adult animated series. In the age of South Park, Big Mouth, and Rick & Morty, I suppose we can all understand that clicking on the trailer below is going to hear some profanity and see some cartoonish violence?
Awesome, because Harley Quinn, which offers a very bent vision of life in Gotham City, is one of the few DC shows or movies actually lovable in recent memory. It starts where there should be many performances, with a breakup. Or at least the beginning of one. As longtime DC Comics fans know, The Joker (or Mr. J if you’re Harley), doesn’t really treat his girlfriend well. And the premiere goes to great lengths to show that Harley likes to justify his behavior.
And once Harley is out of Mr. J’s relationship, she begins to see things more clearly and finds the ambition to be her boss. However, she also finds herself working with a new gang of misfits. But before I introduce them, we need to talk about Kaley Cuoco, the voice of Harley herself.
Yes, Cuoco, best known for her work on The Big Bang Theory (and later The Flight Attendant), does a great job with the character. She may not have a new one collar You may associate it with the character, but you share the performance.
Outside alone, Harley bonds with Poison Ivy (Lake Bell), her boyfriend who has been telling Mrs. Quinn to give up on the Joker for years, Clayface (Alan Tudyk, who voices many characters, including Joker), and King Shark (who plays the Ron Funches as the honest jabberjaw) and the annoying misogynist Dr. Psycho (Tony Hale). And through the adventures of this group of inept villains, you’ll appreciate Harley Quinn.
I also caught up on the Harley Quinn Show where these strangers interacted with Gotham’s other heroes and villains. Diedrich Bader (The Drew Carey Show) makes Batman a great dry run, but this show for Commissioner Gordon (Chris Meloni takes a break from Law and Order for a personal breakdown) is top notch. And I won’t even spoil how James Adumian’s version of Bane is a must. Did I mention that Giancarlo Esposito is Lex Luthor? Talk about casting an actual DCEU could use!
But Harley Quinn is a great show because of its exploration of the mind and emotions of his titular character. It takes you on a journey about how a breakup can deprogram manipulative behavior, all while accusing Batman of doing weird things with actual bats.
Why critics love Harley Quinn
So, while Harley Quinn Season 2 has the strongest Rotten Tomatoes score 100% (Opens in a new tab)I’ll skip those reviews because what matters now is focus on why critics love Season 1 (which got 89% (Opens in a new tab)averages to 94%), you should start with.
AV . Club (Opens in a new tab)Actress Shannon Miller called the show a “very funny win”. She also praised her “perfect comedic timing, a solid cast of comedic hard-hitters, and unrivaled chemistry presented in the form of one of the most satisfying female friendships in a long time”, before calling it “easily one of the year’s best shows”.
in The Hollywood Reporter (Opens in a new tab)Robin Barr wrote: “Harley Quinn is the story of what happens when a woman’s ego is as inflated as any normal man. It’s one of the year’s best surprises.” She also praised the scripts, noting that “the writing is often boisterous, full of millennial nostalgia and humor.”
Eliana Dockterman in time (Opens in a new tab) She wrote that Harley Quinn “offers a master class in how to transform a female character with a disingenuous background into a compelling heroine in her own right.”
Should you watch Harley Quinn now?
Unless you think your feelings are too lousy for some cartoonish violence, I’d say play on Harley Quinn now. While people may be returning to HBO Max for Succession Season 4, Euphoria Season 3 and even Our Flag Means Death Season 2, the first two seasons of Harley Quinn are so good that Mrs. Cuoco’s version of Mrs. Quinn’s voice has been alive in my head rent-free for some time now.
Not only does Harley Quinn scratch the comedic itch, but he also has a real heart and journey inside him. Oh, and all the DC fan services you could ask for. If that is your thing. But even if you’re not a DC fan (I hardly consider myself one, having been primarily in the Batman anthology and the classic Batman animated series), I think Harley Quinn has a thing for you, puddin.
