At least, sort of. As you can see from the video, this isn’t the first time astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti has demonstrated her pop-culture prowess by dressing up as a fictional space traveler while soaring miles above Earth. A few years ago, she sent a message wearing a costume Star TrekCaptain Kirk – William Shatner has technically gone into space Also, if she’s not wearing a costume – and I can’t get over her dedication to sending excitement to fellow sci-fi fans from such a precisely appropriate setting.
It’s a completely different kind of fan dedication than the norm, too. Just think about it: Samantha Cristoforetti obviously can’t visit a costume store or order these costumes from Amazon. (Although Jeff Bezos probably has the means to ship things to the International Space Station.) And she has to think a lot about the future to bring these kinds of trips with her when she’s getting ready to go into space. Not to mention the fact that astronauts can only carry limited baggage and supplies with them, for weight reasons, so the costumes technically take up space that you could have used for other things that wouldn’t necessarily catch Katee Sackhoff’s attention.
Of course, I would like to imagine that they are not just once, and that Samantha Cristoforetti’s entire wardrobe consists of sci-fi costumes that she casually wears while relaxing and working on the International Space Station. Even if she doesn’t, it really looks like she’s living her best geeky life hundreds of miles above our heads.
Now that Katee Sackhoff’s Captain Starbuck has already gone into space, or at least as close as anyone can hope to, there are plenty of other Samantha Cristoforetti sci-fi characters to choose from next time, or maybe she already has a second Sackhoff costume in space station. I have to say, my vote is for star Wars The Bo-Katan franchise, which Sackhoff will continue his exploration in the third season of The Mandalorian.
