First Doom 4’s unedited footage reveals how terrifying it can be

If you’re wondering why Doom 4 never sees the light of day, the latest unedited gameplay footage might explain why the project was scrapped.

When it was announced back in 2008, fans were very excited for Doom 4 as an all-new entry from id’s revolutionary shooter series with the latest visuals at the time.

However, Doom 4’s life cycle wasn’t long enough to see the light of day, as the project was subsequently canceled and took on a new direction leading to Doom (2016), which was a reboot of the series.

DUALSHOCKERS TODAY’S VIDEO

Recently, some unedited Doom 4 footage was shared by no clip On YouTube, it shows a brief scene of the game where the player encounters a number of demonic creatures in dark sewers. Even comparing these short clips to Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal will easily explain to you why Doom 4 has been cancelled.

The first thing that will likely catch your eye in this footage is the fact that the player character is not wearing thick armor. You can see the bare hands of the character holding an old rifle. Also, the gameplay doesn’t look as fast-paced and chaotic as the recent Doom titles. You can only spot two demons in the sewers, which are also very different from the typical enemy design of Doom.

The demon crawling on the sewer roof in the above footage will probably remind you of Lickers in Resident Evil rather than a demon from Doom.

To be honest, if this footage was shown without any labels or titles, it would be very hard for me to guess that it was a scrapped Doom project. This is probably the reason why id Software decided not to release Doom 4 at that time.

The release of Doom (2016) instead of Doom 4 wasn’t a huge hit for id at the time, but the studio managed to exceed fan expectations again when they delivered Doom Eternal a few years ago. Therefore, it is safe to say that Doom (2016) was probably a much better base for the series in its new direction than Doom 4.
