An OLED iPad is said to be in the works at Apple, according to the multiple leaks we’ve seen over the past few months. The latest report says we won’t see such a tablet for the first time until 2024, but it may have a better screen than we expected.
Apple hasn’t told us yet about any plans to produce an iPad with OLED technology, so it’s worth noting that the Korean tech publication ETNews (Opens in a new tab) He claims they heard confirmation of an iPad with an OLED screen releasing in 2024.
A tablet like this would certainly earn a place among the best iPads on the market, but you should take this report with caution because we’ve heard similar reports before, some from ETNews itself.
Last year, the same publication reported that OLED iPads could come in 2022, but that seems to be out of the question now. Of course, it is very likely that Apple had planned to release the iPad this year but delayed it due to the ongoing global supply chain issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
We’ve also seen supportive advice from sources who have been right in the past, including Display Supply Chain Consultants CEO Ross Young and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Young claims that OLED MacBooks and iPads are slated for release in 2024, while Kuo takes a more conservative stance and believes that even if Apple can bring an OLED-equipped MacBook to market in 2024, it will wait until 2025 to follow up with an OLED iPad.
However, there is another interesting piece of information in the ETNews report. The outlet claims that Apple is finalizing prototypes of the iPad OLED display with its partners Samsung and LG that use the dry etching process instead of the wet etching process, creating a thinner, lighter screen.
ETNews believes Apple will go to great lengths with how this dry etching process makes the final product thinner and lighter. If true, it’s hard to tell if Apple might offer dry etching as an essential part of the iPad OLED manufacturing process, or as an optional upgrade you can pay extra for (insofar as it provides textured nanoglass as an optional display upgrade on products like the Apple Studio Display) .
OLED iPads: Outlook
We’ve been hearing reports of an iPad with OLED technology for over a year now, so it’s very reasonable to hear that Apple is finalizing prototypes with its manufacturing partners.
Whether that means we’ll actually see such a product for the first time in 2024 remains to be seen, but given the popularity of OLED screens on laptops and smartphones (including the iPhone, starting with the iPhone X), it’s hard to imagine Apple It’s not difficult working on an OLED iPad now.
